Zacharias Bell
« on: Monday 22 November 10 17:58 GMT (UK) »
Thomas Bell [c1822-1913] residing Derryboy, Killyleagh, Co Down married Ann Mason 17 Feb 1850 in Killyleagh Church of Ireland. Father listed as Zacharias Bell, weaver.

One source states that Zacharias Bell was from Belfast and married a Jane Kennedy - a daughter Jane Bell was christened St Ann's Belfast 12th March 1823 [Source:- 'The Whitewashed City', Story of Crossgar, Co Down, Volume 1 page 42, Tom Hewitt].

I have had a look at PRONI street directories for Zacharias Bell but no return. Anyone familiar with St Anne's church registers, Belfast in the 1820's [as would like to confirm the above christening and find other members of the family if christened there].

Weavers are unlikely to be listed in directories- at that date he could easily have been working from home.

'Zacharias Bell' wouldn't be a common name in Ireland (non come up in civil registration index) but found this (just 'Ireland' not even a county listed)- "He met JENNIE BELL February 10, 1877 in Woodbury, Conn., daughter of ZACHARIAS BELL and MARY BORDUCT. She was born 1858 in Ireland..."

Yes - that's the family in 1901/1911 which I have already. What I am trying to do is confirm the Belfast link back to Zacharias Bell. I will need to examine the St Anne's registers when PRONI re-opens.

I know this is a very old post, but I am wondering if you had any luck with your research?

I have a Zacharias Bell from Ireland in my family tree - I must admit I have clicked on this very page many times over the years because of it. My Zacharias Bell (born circa 1819) married Margaret Collins in Waterford and they lived in County Cork. I do not know where he came from.

Recently I have made a DNA match with somebody who is descended from the Zacharias Bell that you refer to (married to Jane Kennedy) - through their son Thomas (who married Anne Mason). This person matches many of my other Bell DNA matches, so it seems more than a coincidence, especially as the name Zacharias Bell is not that common in Ireland. I wonder if my Zacharias is this Zacharias's son - the DNA match is predicted at between 4th-6th cousins and the older Zacharias (if my hunches are correct) would be my 4th great grandfather.

Cheers, Alicia

Hi Amegilla,

Your Zacharias is the son of the Zacharias in the original post. Your Zacharias Jnr. is the brother of my great-great-great grandfather Thomas Bell, who died in Crossgar, Co. Down, in 1913.

The original Zacharias was born in Clogher, County Tyrone, in 1777. He married Jane Kennedy in Belfast and died in Killyleagh, Co Down.
