Hall family in Chichester - please help me find my missing great aunt!
« on: Monday 22 November 10 22:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm hoping that someone might be able to help after all the great advice I've had here before.

My grandmother was Ella Kate Hall, b. 1907 in Chichester and she died in 1993. Her sister, my great aunt, was Florence Emily Hall, b.1905 in Chichester and who died in 1988. They also had another sister who died (I think before I was born, or when I was too young to remember) so before 1973 or not long after - she was always known as Peggy, but I'm pretty sure it was short for Margaret. Despite trawling various sites I have not been able to locate her birth or any other details, althugh I know she was born after 1911 as she does not appear with the family on the census this year. My only other memory from childhood was that her husband was known as Uncle Hick, although I can't remember whether this was just a nickname or his surname! Again this has thrown up nothing so far. And as I'm not sure whether this was therefore her married name I can't search with any certainty for death dates either.

That's pretty much all I know! Any help with locating details about my lost great aunt would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Jon.

As a starting point, if you know the maiden surname of the mum of Ella Kate and Florence Emily, then your missing aunt will hopefully have the same mother. If she was born after 1912 then on Free BMD you can see births of all Halls with a mother of the required surname - or narrowed down to Chichester if you think she was born there.
There is a potential birth which happened just after the 1911 census of an Eveline M A Hall which may or may not have a Margaret as the M but  the only way to prove that either way and that she is the right family would be to order the birth certificate which costs money I'm afraid as the mother's name is not shown as its before 1912.
If you think they settled in Chichester there are a limited number of births of female Halls but this of course depends on whether you know where the family were. Sometimes you have to spend to help you on the right track! Happy Hunting.

Hi I wonder if this lady is your missing "Peggy"

Birth Doris P Hall Sept 1917 Chichester 2b 465, if so it appears she married a Cecil T Harris in Dec 1939 Chichester 2b 1672.

Also a brother possibly Richard W W Hall Dec 1913 Chichester 2b 598.

Both these people have a mother with a maiden name of Woods, so if you can ascertain the mothers marriage, these may be possibles.

All the best in your searching.

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for the help so far. Sorry, I should have included more details of their parents. Their parents were Eliabeth Suter Hall, nee Woods, b.1878, and Thomas Walter Hall, b.1877, so the Woods maiden name and death date certainly seem possible. I must admit I thought Peggy was instead of Margaret but I may have got that wrong on the basis of usual convention. The possible Richard Hall is interesting as I don't ever recall a brother being mentioned unless he died young perhaps.

Many thanks.
Jon

...sorry meant to add, the other fact I remember was that the missing aunt died on her sister's Florence's birthday (i don't have the date or quarter to hand at present) but if that matches Doris's death date then that would help corroborate! I will need to check!

Thanks
Jon

you won't get the actual death date unless you purchase certificate - the death reg only gives quarter and year of registration.

Hi Suz,

Thanks. Florence's date of birth is 5 February 1905 so this does potentially match with Doris's death registration which is Jan-Mar 1975, so certainly possible. Will investigate further and report back!

Jon.
