Henry Hodgson and Armitage and Hodgson

HENRY HODGSON

I am seeking any information on Henry Hodgson who according to the 1871 census was born in Tredegar abt 1837. He was maried firstly to Harriet born abt 1837 and in the 1871 census was a Staff Seargeant in the Royal Engineers and lived at the Royal Horseguards Barracks. They had 2 children Kate who was 15 in 1871 and Mary Ann aged 14.
There is no records of them in the 1881 census.
In the 1891 census Henry was 54 and was married to Charlotte Armitage aged 40 and his occupation was foreman of  works (civil service Admiralty dept)
Henry joined with either Charlotte or her Father John Armitage to form Armitage and Hodgson contractors in Leeds. They subsequenty built Portsmouth Guildhall which opened in 1908 and Bolton Town Hall. Both buildings were exactly the same although Portsmouth was destroyed by incendiarys during 1941 blitz on Portsmouth. It was subsequently rebuilt but with a new tower whilst Bolton still is as the original was in Portsmouth. There are no records of what happened to the firm who were in Camp Road Leeds. They did undertake many large building projects around the country.
I am also trying to determine what happened to the firm Armitage and Hodgson as they seemed to just disappear which is strange as they were a large company.
any information would be appreciated

Hi,

In case you don't already know Armitage & Hodgson also built County Hall, Wakefield:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/County_Hall,_Wakefield

and the Dyson Perrins Laboratory at Oxford University, completed in 1916:

I wonder if any company documents are at the National Archives or Companies House?  Worth a try maybe.

According to the 1871 census, Harriet was born in Lincoln, so this is probably the marriage (from the LDS pilot site http://search.labs.familysearch.org )

Henry HODGSON, son of Edward HODGSON married Harriet Elphir SHAW, daughter of Thomas SHAW at Lincoln on 28 May 1855.  Groom aged 21; bride aged 19.

Harriet died just after the 1871 census:

Deaths Sep 1871
HODGSON   Harriet       34
Pancras 1b 6

Did Henry marry Charlotte in Ireland?  Several of their children were born there, and judging from the dates, they were probably still in Ireland when the 1881 census was taken.

A possible birth for Henry, also from the LDS pilot site:

Henry HODGSON, son of Edward HODGSON and Rebecca, b. 9 Jul 1836 and baptised 24 Jul 1836 at Sharon Independent, Tredegar Iron Works, Monmouthshire.

Brilliant information - thanks.
Henry Hodgson maried Charlotte at the parish church of Camden Town Middlesex on Dec 4 1871. Her maiden name was NALDRETT, which I believe is a very old Sussex name.
Now need to try and trace information on Edward and Rebecca
thanks for all the effort
