Maitlands in Ireland - again
« on: Tuesday 12 April 05 12:45 BST (UK) »
My husband's great grandfather Robert Maitland was born in Ireland in 1922 or 1923 (possibly Co Antrim) and may have married there before moving to England to work in the Durham coalfields.

Can anyone find details of his marriage - probably some time between 1840 and 1852. His wife's name was Mary. That's all the info I have.

Dot,

39 people have read your message. It would be correct to say seen but not read as there is a slip in it. Maybe those people were shy and did not want to point out your wee error.

Robert Maitland was born in Ireland between 1822/23, not 1922/23. During the period of Griffiths Valuation of Ireland (1848 - 64) there were 16 families named Maitland in the country so with the assistance of some of the eagle eyed and keen researchers on the Irish boards we may be able to find some useful information about Robert, his ancestors and also his descendents. You are once again near the top of the list so say a little prayer and maybe the Lord will help our researchers to find the information you seek

I don't know if I found the correct family in England or not, but it looks as though it could be.

You could try and find out his date and place of marriage by checking the birth certificate of one of his children. You can obtain this information from the General Register Office at
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ unless of course you can find someone to do a lookup for you in Durham England

I hope this helps.

Hi Janice,

That is an excellent piece of searching that you have done to assist Dot. It appears what we need to do next is find the marriage of Robert Senior and his Mary. I wonder if it took place in Ireland or England?

Best Wishes, Chris

Chris

As Robert senior's son Robert was born in England about 1850-1851, I thought that if Dot were to retrieve either Robert junior's birth or one of the other children's birth certificates, she may be able to see where and when the parents were married. She should also be able to see "Mary senior's" maiden name. (Of course to find out the names of the other children, she would need to see the 1851 or 1861 census for England) Unfortunately, I don't have access to that. (Someone should be able to help her with that, if she posts in the "Durham County" section for England.

I tried searching the BVRI for Robert and Mary's marriage, but there is nothing listed at all. I also tried the LDS Family Search site, as well as "Irish Genealogy" at http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/non_flash/frame_800.htm but again nothing.
