LYMATH
« on: Saturday 27 November 10 23:52 GMT (UK) »
Researching the unusual surname LYMATH.

My gg-grandfather, George LYMATH married Elizabeth BOORER in 1858. According to the marriage certificate his father was Thomas LYMATH, schoolmaster.

I have been unable to find George LYMATH or his family in the 1861 Census. A daughter, Jessie, was born in Banstead, Surrey in 1858 as were her sisters, Susanna in 1860, and Alice and Charlotte in 1862.

George LYMATH died in 1864 in Westminister, Middlesex at the age of 47.

I have been able to trace other LYMATHs to the Banbury area of Oxfordshire. There are also instances of LYMATH in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in Warwickshire and Northamptonshire, however, I have not be able to establish George LYMATHs origins.

Hi

Was George a bachelor or a widower on the 1858 marriage cert.  What was his occupation

Was Elizabeth a spinster or a widow - when was she born and where

You say he died in 1864 but there is no entry on freebmd.

Joseph THOMPSON married Elizabeth LYMATH nee BOORER on 31 Mar 1866 at Stepney, Middlesex.

Elizabeth BOORER, the daughter of Frederick BOORER and Sarah SCRAGG, was born in Sutton, Surrey on 27 Feb 1830.

I have lots of information about Elizabeth and her daughters. It's my gg-grandfather, George LYMATH, who is the mystery.

His name on his death certificate is recorded as George LYMUTH. According to his death certificate he was a domestic coachman. He died at the age of 47 at Westminister Hospital.

According to the marriage certificate, George was a bachelor and a coachman living at Chatham Place, Locksfields. Elizabeth was a spinster living at the same address.

Not exactly what you were asking for, but have you noticed Elizabeth LYMATH marrying Henry Francis Fincher in 1884?  This marriage took place at St Giles, Camberwell on 5th July.   Elizabeth gives her age as 29 (so born 1854/5), and names her father as George LYMATH, coachman.   Her address is Raglan Villa, Sutton.  Witnesses are Henry Fincher, George Leeson and Amy Amelia Fincher.

In 1891 Elizabeth Fincher, wife of Henry F is aged 36  and gives her birthplace as Sutton, Surrey - which is  named as George and Elizabeth's daughters' birthplace in the 1871 census.

Nice one Galium - so George may have had at least one daughter before marrying Elizabeth Boorer in 1858

I am aware of Elizabeth LYMATH and the possibility that George LYMATH was her father.

Elizabeth Steel BOORER, daughter of Elizabeth BOORER, was born on 27 Oct 1854 in Sutton, Surrey, and baptised at St Nicholas, Sutton on 19 Nov 1854. Her birth was registered in the Epsom Registration District in the 4th quarter of 1854. I have not yet ordered her birth certificate nor checked the actual baptism entry, so do not know if any information about her father was included. It is possible that George LYMATH was the father, but it is also possible that he "adopted" Elizabeth when he married her mother.

Not being able to find any of the family in the 1861 Census, or George LYMATH in the 1851, has been very frustrating since either census would certainly answer some questions, especially the question of where George LYMATH was born.

No father's name mentioned in the baptism, just d/o Elizabeth Boorer of Sutton. With a second name also being a surname, it is possible her father's surname was STEEL. One way of letting people know who the father was, without actually naming him. There were a couple of STEEL baptisms in Sutton in 1846 and 1858.
