Births In Scotland
« on: Tuesday 30 November 10 06:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find out if a Martha Graham was born in Glasgow between 1880 and 1885. What site do I go to ? If its Scotspeople, when it asks for location, is Glasgow only Glasgow City, or are any of the other place names in Glasgow ?

Thanks
Karen

With Scotland's People you still use one credit to view a whole page of results, so you could expand your search if unsure. The trouble is, you will need to search the OPR's from 1850 to 1854 and then the Statutory Registers for 1855.

Glasgow is a city, I'm not sure what the difference between 'Glasgow' and 'Glasgow City' is but I'll be interested to learn that too.  :)

Have you tried the IGI? There are quite a lot Margaret Graham baptisms on there:

Do you happen to know Margaret's parent's names?

Did you get her approximate year of birth from Census returns?

This might help a bit:

Glasgow is mostly in Lanarkshire with a small part of it in Renfrewshire ...   ::)

Hi

In ScotlandsPeople Glasgow City covers the dozen or so Registration Districts that made up the Glasgow area, Lanarkshire includes the Glasgow City Registration Districts. Once you have selected Glasgow City the list of Districts will change to show those included.

Between 1880 and 1885 it looks like there are only 3 births registered for a Martha Graham in Lanarkshire and only one of those was in Glasgow City. You would need to download the image to confirm parents.

If the family were still in Scotland then checking the 1891 census may be an option to confirm place of birth and a more accurate age.

Andy
