Hi Kate,
You lucky, lucky ducky  ;) :D
What a beautiful photograph!  I would say it is an ambrotype.  If you can easily see it from all angles it's not a daguerreotype.
Yes, almost certainly from the mid-late 1850s - if you can give us a closer view of the image, it might help to date it more closely.

The mat surround is really beautiful and the whole thing is in really lovely condition, and nice to see the case - they are often completely lost.

Cheers
Prue

Hi Prue

I will go and have a look as its been packed away for a while.

I think it was made in Ballarat Victoria. I will see if I can get a closer photo of it

Would you believe my Great Aunty sent it to me by post in the 1980's !

I have just remembered I got a professional copy done of the photo I think by the state library years ago.

Will see if I can scan it

Regards
Kate

Oooh, does she have ringlets? Definitely in Prue's date window. How wonderful, don't often see something like this!

Her jewelry seems to have been overpainted in gold, very bright rings on her hands. As it's an ambrotype, which was developed directly on the glass, the image is reversed. Should look like this.

Hello
This is the photo I had done of the Ambrotype a few years ago.

I had  alook at the case and no writing on it.

I had to crop the photo slightly when I scanned it to fit the allowed size

The photo of this lovely was taken early 1860's I would suggest.the bolero style jacket was just becoming popular at this time.So 1860-3.
As China said these are in reverse & China has put it round the right way but here it is again from the larger image & how she would have looked at the sitting.
She looks early-mid 20's so someone born 1835-40 & probably newly married.
If you want this restored/coloured just add it to the heading,I'm sure you'll get plenty of offers.

Do you know who it is? And when she married? Because she seems to be showing off a ring...married ladies, particularly newly-married ones, were posed by the photographer to display the wedding ring. It's possible this is even a wedding photo, as couples were usually photographed separately to mark the occasion, or perhaps only the woman was photographed.

If you would like this restored or even coloured, you should go back to the first post in the thread and edit the title to reflect it, as restorers aren't supposed to work on photos unless requested. Some do anyway :)

Restoring an Ambrotype 1850's ?
« Reply #7 on: Thursday 02 December 10 00:51 GMT (UK) »
Hello all

Its funny to see it in the reverse correct view after seeing it the wrong way around for 30 years or so !

I believe them to be my  G grandparents and they were married 1850  in Dublin Ireland. But cant be sure who they are . My great auntie sent them to me but the dates fit

What would be the cost to have the female photo restored?

The male photo is beyond repair. All my fault I dropped it years ago.  I know have felt terrible about it ever since

The case is not in very good condition unlike like the female one. Would like a rough date for the male photo.

The first time I saw it I thought it is the spitting image of my deceased brother so cherish this photo even more

Hi Kate,
Do you mean restored digitally, or restored physically?

Digital restoration of photos is done for no charge here at Rootschat :)

Physical conservation, and possibly some restoration, is also possible for the two photos.  In particular it would be possible to get the photo of the man back together again to some degree, and housed securely.  The photo of the lady I would not touch, as it seems to be in beautiful condition.  The case could be repaired though.

I am happy to provide more information about this if you want to go down that path :)

Cheers
