Ryan & Cardiff of Kisha Mill, Ballyhitt, Ladies Island
« on: Thursday 02 December 10 00:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Looking for information on Ryan and Cardiff families of Kisha Mill, Ballyhitt, Ladies Island.

Michael Ryan of Mountainmuck / Lambstown, Killurin marries a Cardiff of Kisha Mill in 1870.

Michael Ryan and family are buried on Ladies Island; I do not know where the Cardiff’s are buried.

I attach a photo of the Ryan headstone on Ladies Island.

Below are links to the Census for Ryan / Cardiff in 1901 & Ryan in 1911.

Hi Culbaire

The children are from the 2nd marriage of Michael Ryan to Elizabeth Larkin of Bulgan, Glynn in 1887.

I have not found any children from the 1st marriage to Cardiff.

Have you a connection with any of the families or the area mentioned?

Hi Adey

A Richard Cardiff from Ladies Island lived in Bulgan Glynn. I do not know if he was connected to Michael Ryan’s first wife Cardiff of Kisha.

Michael Ryan’s second wife was from Bulgan. I do not know if Richard Cardiff was any connection to her.

I think I have information somewhere in my files about Richard Cardiff working on ships and he came back to Bulgan from Wales with his wife? surname Jones?

Richard Cardiff died in 1956 aged 81 so born c.1875.

There are reports in the Irish Times of 13th & 14th of April 1956 on his death. These can be accessed free of charge in public libraries and schools in Ireland at:

Hi Adey,

I have found the newspaper cutting of the inquest of Richard Cardiff of Bulgan. It is from the Irish Times of 14th April 1956 p11.

I attach a copy of it. I was told he was from Ladies Island. I don’t know if this is of any use to you?

Hi Mogue, this is very sad what an awful way to die but thanks for the info. I believe great grandfather Richard Cardiff was from Tacumshin and he settled in Wales where he died in 1934, his father was also Richard is on the 1911 Ireland census, so not sure who the other Richard Cardiff is but they could be related.

Hi Adey

I have looked at the 1901 & 1911 Census for Richard Cardiff, there are not many.

In 1901 there are 3.

In Walshestown. born c.1876.
In North Main Street, Wexford. Born c.1884.
In Tacumshin. born c. 1838

In 1911 there are 2.

In Walshestown born c.1876
In Tacumshin born c. 1837

Which of these is your Richard Cardiff?
Which is the Bulgan Glynn Richard Cardiff?

There is a Julia Cardiff with a Brady Uncle in Bulgan Glynn. This brings back a memory of an older resident of Bulgan telling me that Brady was from down Ladies Island way, also Kavanagh of Bulgan from Ladies Island.

I don’t know if any of this ties in with your Cardiff or if it is of any use to you?

Regards
Mogue

Hi Richard Cardiff c 1837 is my great great grandfather and her married Catherine Rossiter. My great grandfather Richard Cardiff was born 1874 - If I remember correctly in the 1911 Census there was a daughter Catherine living with her dad Richard and one brother. I believe Richard Cardiff senior died c1912
