Garvey - Watchmakers - Coventry
« on: Friday 03 December 10 09:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have been researching Thomas Garvey, watchmaker, born around 1818.  Married Sarah Hinde of Olney in London in 1843.  His father is listed as John Garvey, Carpenter on the marriage.

Going through FamilySearch, there seem to be a number of Garveys from Coventry involved in the watchmaking trade.  I have found Michael, John & Mary, aswell as a Thomas - children of John & Mary.

Now I'm trying to tie my Thomas Garvey - watchmaker, son of John the carpenter, with the Garvey watchmakers of Coventry.  Is this Thomas one & the same?  Does anyone know anything of this family?
Thanks,
Debbie

Hello Debbie
there was another child,Elizabeth b.1825/d.1829.
John & Michael were both involved in the watchmaking trade which wouldn't be unusual as this was big business in Coventry.
You don't say which Garvey family you are trying to tie them in with.Is it these 2 or another family?

Sorry - didn't explain myself very well.

I'm trying to find anything to join Thomas Garvey who married Sarah Hinde, with Michael, John & Elizabeth Garvey of Coventry.

I don't know where my Thomas Garvey was born. He is in Olney in 1841 as Thomas Garry (watchmaker), then marries Sarah Hinde in London.  They have 3 children, but by 1851 Sarah is described as a widow.  I haven't been able to find a death record for him.

On Thomas & Sarah marriage, Thomas father is John Garvey, a carpenter.  John Garvey of Coventry is the father of Michael, John & Elizabeth and a Thomas - but I don't know if he is the same one as I can't find anything to confirm.

All a bit of a longshot really - just searching for clues to confirm or deny my theory!

As he was dead by 1851 it's going to be difficult to prove one way or the other.
If you put Thomas Garvey into IGI with father John the only one it comes up with is the Thomas in Coventry.
In 1841 Thomas says be was born outside of the County.
There is no Thomas Garvey born Warwickshire appearing in the census.
His 2 children are listed as Mary & John, after his parents possibly.
All circumstantial but it seems he's the right one.

Edit:
The NBI has a death for Thomas Garvey/Feb.1849 aged 29/Coventry
The NBI covers Olney up to 1851 & he isn't listed there.
Maybe he died in Olney but was buried in Coventry or was in Coventry visiting when he died.
burial date;Feb.18/1849/London Rd.Civic Cemetery.
The BMSGH hold fiches & books which can be purchased which may give additional information, whether these are monumental inscriptions is unclear but here's the link:

It looks like Parents John & Mary died 1833 & 4 resp.does his marriage list his father as deceased?

All possible - but yes - circumstantial.  Hopefully barking up the right tree though!

On Thomas' marriage his father is not listed as deceased - but not sure they always are?

Looking at the other potential siblings of Thomas - Michael & John - they all has children with the same family names.  I was hoping that somewhere along the line one of the children might have visited one of the other families but nothing so far.

I did find a marriage for a Maria Garvey - father John Garvey, Carpenter - in Coventry - to Pridmore.  1 Feb 1847
http://www.hunimex.net/warwick/bmd/Coventry/St.%20Michael%20Coventry%20Marriages%201847-56.pdf
So this may be a connection.

Thanks for the info on the Thomas Garvey death.  I'll try to find out more about that one.

Debbie

what's important is there aren't 2 Thomas Garvey's with a father John & there aren't 2 of anything else for Thomas,so I think you need the burial details & monumental inscription which may give a wifes name.

Hi
It looks like you could have the right Thomas Garvey.

I have a Coventry apprentice enrolment disc and there is a

Thomas Garvey who's father was John a carpenter of Coventry, Thomas enrollled as an apprentice to John Brittain 02/11/1832 in the trade of watchmaking.  Thomas then transferred from John Brittain to Samuel Vale/John & Richard Rotherham watchmakers on 15/02/1837.

There is also a John Garvey with a father John (carpenter) who enrolled 01/04/1826 to Samuel Vale watchmaker  There is a michael who again enrolled with samuel Vale 08/08/1834 but no father listed.

Going one step further back

John Garvey, father John a weaver of Coventry enrolled 12/01/1798 to Samuel May in the trade of carpenter, joiner & cabinet maker

There is also a possible London connection

James Garvey, father James Garvey (deceased) of London who enrolled 26/11/1805 to master waterfall as a watchmaker.

Hope this helps

There is a michael who again enrolled with samuel Vale 08/08/1834 but no father listed.

Maybe Michael's father was John the carpenter but was not listed as he was deceased by 1834, as per Jim's post.

This is great and it looks like heading in the right direction!  Hoorah!! We have been hunting around for Thomas Garvey for ages!

But then we were looking in the wrong place (Olney).

Thank you!
