Coats of Arms on a wedding altar
« on: Friday 03 December 10 22:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi, from Spain,
 :)
Forgive my ignorance :-[-does that mean that there maybe some experts who could perhaps tell me about coats of arms I have on anantique wedding alter.

This Alter is made of I believe Black Irish bog wood, and has various coats of arms, carved on front and doors, had been told that the arms were of the bride and groom.
Also on the front is carved   "TYME TRYETH TROTH"

I would be so interested to know who the family coats of arms were.

Sorry if this is not what this board is for.

Hello,

there are a couple of references on the web which link the motto to the Trevellyan family, Somerset - here is one:

Minor variations of the motto seem to have been used by various Trevellyan family in both Cornwall and Northumberland e.g. tyme spelt time and troth replaced by truth.

However I haven't found any examples of it being used by other families.

To get any further we need to see the full coats of arms.

Hi Elsa-Mary,

your image looks like three ermine spots on a shield. Usually they were used to indicate fur (in which case there are lots of them in a neat pattern), but sometimes (not so often) they are used as "charges", i.e. objects in their own right (fewer and bigger), and I think that might be the case here. See link for a much better explanation :)

Are there any traces of colour on your altar? If so that might help a lot in trying to identify the possible owners of the arms.

Roger

Thank you,it came out !!!!

No no colour-all shields--EXCEPT top Cross-similar in size,it is wood-a very dark wood-I have been told , thought Bog Oak-.
A very -to me beautiful carved piece of furniture,- I have polished this for 55 years myself !!!
I love carved furniture---AND SO did my Mother-who had this many many years.
