Mary Burke, born Waterford - Lived in Bermondsey
« on: Sunday 05 December 10 07:16 GMT (UK) »
Once again I am seeking the assistance of you knower's of stuff.

My Grandfather (Matthew Hickey 1907 Lismore) was born in Lismore Workhouse.  His mother on his birth certificate is shown as Mary Burke.  I do not know when she was born but would imagine it to be between 1880 and 1890.  I am assuming that Mary was also born in the Waterford region.

Mary moved to England after my Grandfathers birth.  I do not know when.  She apparently married and lived in Cathay Street (just off Paradise Street) in Bermondsey with her husband (I'm sorry but I do not know his name).  My Grandfather left Ireland in about 1932 and moved to London.  I am informed that he stayed with his mother and step-father for a while but didn't have a good relationship with his SF.

I appreciate it is a long shot, but I would really like to trace Mary Burke in any records in the London area around that time.  If anybody could help I really would appreciate it.

Hi Steve,

There are a couple of possible marriage registrations on FreeBMD;

Mary Burke   JunQ 1913   St. Olave   1d 367          Groom:   George Daldry

Mary Burke    DecQ 1917  St. Olave   1d 402          Groom:    Alfred Edwards

Bermondsey is in the St.Olave registration district.   I searched from 1907-1917;  do you know approximately when Mary married?

You could also try a search of the 1911 census; the index is free to search but then it is pay-per-view or subscription.

Sorry - no sign of Mary in Cathay Street on the 1911 census.

Cathay Street seems to have a lot of multiple-occupancy houses, and my guess is that if they lived there it would have been temporary.

A quick update for anyone who is interested.

I couldn't find anything on Mary in any records whatsoever and had pretty much resigned myself to never finding any further information.

Just recently I stumbled across the London Electoral records (1850 to 1965).  In 1938 my Grandfather (Matthew Hickey) was shown as living at 9 Cathay Street in Bermondsey.  Also listed at the address was a Leonard PICKRELL, John PICKRELL and a Mary Brigid PICKRELL.  I had previously been told by my ageing Uncle that my Grandfather had a half-brother named 'Johnnie PICKLES'.

I looked at marriages between BURKE and PICKRELL in the Bermondsey area from 1910 to 1935 and found that a Mary BOURK (born in Waterford) had married Harry PICKRELL in 1916.  They had two sons, Leonard and John.

So I am very pleased and satisfied that I have found 'my' Mary.  Now onto the Irish records to find details of her birth e.t.c.

Just shows you that perseverance is the key (it's only taken 5 years to find out that information!)

All the best
Steve
