James Lysaght b 1822 Limerick
« on: Sunday 05 December 10 11:38 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
          I am trying to find information on the parents and ancestors of James LYSAGHT

James LYSAGHT was born in 1822 in Shanagh Golden, Limerick, Ireland.

He travelled to Australia (Port Phillip) in 1841 on the "Middlesex" with other Lysaght family members
  Michael Lysaght 30 hus (family 23) Limerick
  Mary Lysaght 28 wife of Michael (family 23)
  James Lysaght 22 (single man 35) Limerick
  William Lysaght 21 (single man 34) Limerick
  Margaret Lysaght 21 (single woman 41)
  Biddy Lysaght 19 (single woman 40)

James then married in 1850, Portland Bay, Victoria, to Harriet GREEN and had the following children:

   1. Ellen LYSAGHT b. 1854, Woodford, Vic, m. Hugh Byrne CARROLL;
   2. Mary LYSAGHT b. 1856, Woodford, Vic, m. Thomas GIBSON;
   3. John LYSAGHT b. 1858, Woodford, Vic, d. 1867, Maroona, Vic;
   4. Andrew LYSAGHT b. 1863, d. 1863, Maroona, Vic;
   5. James LYSAGHT b. 1864, Maroona, Vic;
   6. Harriet Theresa LYSAGHT b. 1868, Maroona, Vic, m. Richard Thomas GLEESON

James died in 1871 in Casterton, Victoria, Australia.

Is anybody else researching this family or able to shed any light on James' ancestors in Limerick.

Regards,
Greg

you could try searching the parish registers on www.rootsireland.ie
It's free to search but costs €5 to view each record.
A quick look didn't show any James Lysaght in Shanagolden but try the other parishes.

I have Michael Lysaght and Mary Lysaght (nee Maloney) who arrived on the Middlesex in 1841 in Geelong where they had four boys as follows:
Patrick Lysaght (Licet on the birth record) born 6 January 1842 in Geelong
Andrew Lysaght (Liret on the record) born 16 June 1844 at ‘Willowby’, Geelong
Michael Lysaght, born 18 February 1849, ‘Richardson River’, Geelong
Thomas Lysaght, born 15 November, 1851, Barrabool Hills .

Mary Lysaght's (1813 -1889) death record in Ballarat lists two older children:
John Lysaght (~1838 -1900)
Ellen Lysaght (~1839 -1906).
i.e. six children in all; five boys and one girl.

John Lysaght married Sarah Madigan and lived in Geelong.
Ellen Lysaght married John Evans in 1874 in Geelong and lived in Ballarat.

I am a descendant of Ellen Lysaght and trying to establish if she arrived into Geelong on the Echunga in 1854 (with a John Lysaght) or on the Lady Kennaway into Sydney in 1854.

Information on the shipping record for the Ellen Lysaght who arrived on the Lady Kennaway in 1854 reads "Parents Michael and Mary living in Geelong". For the Ellen Lysaght who arrived with John Lysaght into Geelong on the Echunga in 1857 (not 1854) reads "Gone to father - Michael Lysaght, Queenscliff Road".

The following advertisement was published in the Melbourne Argus on Thursday 8 December, 1959.
"If this should meet the eye of MICHAEL LYSAGHT, or his wife Mary, natives of Shanagolden, County Limerick, Ireland, who emigrated to Melbourne about 17 years ago, they are earnestly requested to write to their daughter Ellen, who has been in Sydney for about five years, and has never heard from them. Direct to Mr. J. Donohoe, NewTown, near Sydney, N.S.W."

The Ellen Lysaght in the advertisement is consistent with her being the Ellen Lysaght on the Lady Kennaway who arrived in Sydney in 1854.

The Ellen (and John) Lysaght who arrived on the Echunga in 1857, were from County Limerick but the parish is not specified although their father is named as Michael Lysaght, living in Geelong. It would appear that the Ellen Lysaght on the Echunga is from a different family to the Ellen Lysaght on the Lady Kennaway. A search for the parents of Ellen and John Lysaght in County Limerick who initially settled in Geelong from 1842 to circa 1851 will therefore need to extend beyond the parish of Shanagolden.

The advertisement in the Melbourne Argus should read 8 December 1859 NOT 1959. My mistake - sorry.

"Ellen Lysaght married John Evans in 1874 in Geelong and lived in Ballarat."

Do you have a death certificate for your Ellen?.  If Ellen died in Victoria or NSW the certificate would ask for "years in the colony". What do you see?

Ellen Lysaght's death certificate in May 1906 records that she was 50 years in the colony of Victoria. If this is correct it indicates that she arrived circa 1856 and thus most probably arrived on the Echunga in 1857.
Thanks
