MORRIS Llansilin
« on: Monday 06 December 10 05:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have a Thomas MORRIS age 53 in the 1851 census born LLANSILIN.
Could SKS lookup his birth and parents and whether he had siblings?
I'd be very grateful
Mike

Hello Mike  :)

Welcome to Rootschat

There are two possible Thomas Morris's baptisms showing in Llansilin parish records around the late 1790s:

Jan 24 1797 (born 21st) s/o John and Eleanor in the township of Lledrod

Jan 14th 1798 (born 8th) s/o Edward and Margaret of the township of Sychtyn

Do you have any information on his possible children's names to see if either of these baptisms might be him?

Note that if the family were non-conformists, the baptism wouldn't be listed as  only those baptised by an Anglican minister are included in the parish records and even then some were missed from the records.

JL

PS - Note that Morris was one of the most common surnames in Llansilin at the time  :-\

I see that on the 1841,  HO107/1405/1/7/8 , he is already in Meriadog, St Asaph with children Joseph, Ebenezer and Elizabeth

These names  don't give many clues and he could have had older children who had already left home.  His wife, Sarah was also about 12 years older than he was so that she might have been married before  :-\

Thanks JL

Very helpful. And it raises questions.

Thomas was indeed non-conformist, at least when the three children we know about were born. Calvinist Methodist. He married Sarah Jones, but I haven't found the marriage (Morris and Jones...as you say, common names!)

Joseph had a daughter Margaret as a fourth child (others - Sarah, Joseph Haydn and Amelia) and Ebenezer had a son Edward James as a seventh child, fourth son (others Thomas Henry, Sarah, Richard Cumming, Edith A, Ellen Jane, Joseph Haydn, and Rosa K)

Is Joseph Haydn a clue?

Thanks for your help.
Mike

Another issue with Llansilin is that it was quite common for families living in Llansilin parish to baptise their chilldren at Llangadwaladr.

No Thomas Morrises in Llansilin during that period though.

If I were to guess, I would say it is the one from Lledrod. Sychtyn is in Shropshire and I find people born there generally put either Sychtyn or Oswestry as the place of birth in the census. Or they will put that they were born in Llansilin, Shropshire as oppsoed to Denbigshire.

Their marriage appears to be:

John   Morris, otp & Elinor Griffiths, otp; by banns on 24 June 1787 by William Williams, Curate; both signed their names; Wit: Robert Robert & ? Griffiths
