Hello!

It seems I should wait until I am fully awake before writing! I do have the 1851 census on ancestry for George Gurney but am unable to find Fanny on it. I believe found George within the past month or so! He must have moved to Hall Place between the time of the census and the marriage! It's the 1841 census that I can't find George Gurney on but in 1846 (on the marriage certificate), he's listed as a shoemaker! He was also a shoemaker after immigrating to America.

I am looking for George Gurney on the 1841 census!

Fanny was born Frances S. Hibbs. She was born in approximately 1830 (I presume in Dorset, like her siblings but I can't find any baptism info for her). Her parents were Charles Hibbs and Frances Hallet! I can find her parents and siblings, but no Fanny...

Hi all,

Here's one I hope someone can help me with.

My ancestor William Gripper shows (I'm pretty sure it's him anyway) in the 1841 Census as living with a family named GURNEY in Rickmansworth. family memories/legends say that he was raised by an aunt after his mother died.

Basic marriage searches don't show any surname link between Gripper and Gurney that I can see and we're going back to the beginnings of census data as well.

Any advice or assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Trevor

Hi

Looks like he is in Chorleywood in 1851 described as "Son-in-law"
HO107 1714 17
John Wood Head 34 Rickmansworth
Ann Wood Wife 36 Rickmansworth
Richard Wood Son 3 Rickmansworth
Fanny Wood Dau 11 MO Rickmansworth
William Gripper 14 son-in-law Watford

Maybe ...........
William
Mother:    Anne Gripper
Birth:    abt 1837
Baptism:    5 Feb 1837 - Watford, Hertfordshire, England

Shortest line between 2 points?
Ann Wood is his mother?

Added .........
Anne Gripper / John Woods
Date: Q3 1842 Watford Vol: 6 Page ?!?!

1841 Ann is in Rickmansworth as a Servant
HO101 438 22 8 10
Thomas Wilson  40   "?" Officer     (What is the first word, anyone translate?)
Matilda  Wilson  30
Elizabeth Barber 60
Ann Gripper 25

Hi Trevor

Welcome to RootsChat. ;D

Can't find a link between the Gurney's & William Gripper but perhaps there isn't one, he could have just been staying with them in 1841. As Ray has pointed out, William was christened in Watford to Ann, no father mentioned, Ann then marries John Wood, William is with them in 1851 in Chorleywood where John & Anne can be found through to 1881, looks like Anne died between 81 & 91 as John is a widow in 91. Indexed as Woods on most census.

Gripper isn't a Rickmansworth name & there is only the one family on Family Search. Looks like Anne was christened 26th Dec 1813 to James & Elizabeth Grippor (sic), other siblings to James & Elizabeth are,
Mary Gripper 25th May 1800, Rickmansworth,
Mary Gripper 25th May 1801 Rickmansworth,
Sarah Gripper 3/8 July 1803 Watford,
Joseph Gripper 4 June 1806 Watford,
Joseph Grippor (sic) 7May 1809 Rickmansworth
Jane Grippor(sic) 20 May 1810 Rickmansworth
William Grippor(sic) 26 April 1812 Rickmansworth
Hannah Grippor(sic) 25 May 1817 Rickmansworth.

It would seem that most of these children died apart from Ann & Sarah, if you would like the burials I can give them to you, all in Rickmansworth St Marys Church.

There is also a burial for James Gripper 25 Nov 1832 aged 78, most likely their father.

Hope this is some help & the correct family.

Thanks Ray and Maddie,

I'd been wondering about variations on spelling of the surname, so I'll include searches for GRIPPOR from now on as well.

In the meantime, you've given me some stuff to go on with  -many thanks.

Trevor :)

Hi all,

Sorry Trevor,  WELCOME.

I am also sorry that Maddie beat me to it.   ???  ;D ;D

Was your "connection to Gurney" based only upon this census entry?

As they are neighbours a handful of dwellings apart, it looks to me that AnnGurney would be babysitting while AnnGripper worked (in the pub), on the night of the census at least.

So the story about William's mother dying and being raised by an aunt is possibly only to disguise the "stigma". William is described as "son-in-law" in the 51 so it looks like John Wood(s) will have known the true story.

Of course another pitch to the "raised by an aunt" is that AnnGurney could be the "aunt" and looked after him "a lot of the time".  Also could be "aunt" by name not reality.
