Thorpe Foster OBE
« on: Thursday 09 December 10 17:47 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone has access to old newspaper articles for the wakefield
dewsbury area.  My Husbands Great Grandfather Thorpe Foster
was a manager at the Monckton Coke & Chemical works. on his Daughters
marriage certificate in 1933 it has him down as Thorpe Foster OBE.
we know he was awarded an OBE for Bravery as apparently he saved
a lot of lives in the coke ovens, but unsure as to when he was awarded this
his daughter was born 1915 so it was sometime between then and 1933
I have contacted the National Archives and they say they have
no record as a lot of records were destroyed in 2nd world war, they advised searching the local newspapers for a mention. Unfotunately  I am not in a position to subscribe to these sites and also I live abroad so can't visit libraries etc. I would really appreciate if any member has access if the could possible do a search for me.

Many thanks
Mary

Hello The Wife,
If you look in the London Gazette there are a few mentions of Thorpe Foster of Bradford, Coke merchants and Potato merchants, there seems to be a bankrupcy petition among other listings,( you need to scroll backwards a few pages to see what the listing is talking about.)
Use the search "Foster, Thorpe" and see what you get. try missing out the comma.
Residing at Melbourne House, Low Moor Bfd.
cannot see his OBE though,
I would have thought it would have been listed in the Gazette.
Regards,
Andy

Thorpe Foster OBE was my grandfather (on my father's side). If there are any other family members out there who may have a photo of him I would be very interested.  I have uncovered details of his award in the Jan 1919 London Gazette and in the Yorkshire Post 20 January 1919 edition.

Welcome to rootschat, Wonder1007.

The opening post here is more than 10 years old, so people who posted may not be around.

However, I had a quick look on Ancestry where Thorpe is now in about 25 trees, and at least one of them has a photo.

Just seen that there were births for 2 Thorpe Fosters, so do not know which family is which, and probably some of the tree owners do not either.

Photo is probably the wrong one.

Birth S qr Howden 1874  Thorpe Foster mmn Hutchinson

Birth D qr Howden  1874  Thorpe Foster mmn Richardson

Added:
Some people think she is the same person - Hutchinson nee Richardson or vice versa....

I noted the initial post was 10 years old and wasn't really expecting to hear back from anyone but "hope springs eternal".

Thanks for the pointer to the family trees.

Regards
