Robina Shiells is my 4XGreat Grandmother.

I have been unable to locate a baptism or death for her.

She married John Paterson/Patterson on 15th October 1826 in Haddington

They had 3 children all born in Haddington:

Elizabeth born 1827
Jane born 1830
Alison born 1831

in 1833, John a widow remarries to a Mark Perkins in St Cuthberts, Midlothian,

In 1841 he is living in Haddington, occupation a plumber.

Is is likely for a death/burial not to be registered for that period?

I have a possible birth for Robina:

Binnie Shiells 6 Aug 1801 in Haddington - parents Peter Shiells and Elizabeth Lemon, but of course can't prove 100% it is her.

I have searched Scotlands people (using up heaps of credits) to no avail.

Any suggestions or help will be appreciated.

thanks

Hi Shevy

You have to remember that this period that you are looking at for Robina's death is before the start of official registration in Scotland in 1855. Before this date, you are looking for Old Parish Register entries and burial info is the most patchy of all unfortunately.

Have your read through the help notes on SP? www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Content/Help/index.aspx?r=554&1353

Births often fared no better, www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Content/Help/index.aspx?r=554&405

Hi Monica,

thanks for your reply, yep I gathered it was probably a case of many events not being registered when you start having to look at OPR's. But it is very frustrating not being able to trace her backwards.

One of the witnesses to a baptism of a child between Robert Anderson and Joan Shiells was a Robert Paterson.

Now the Peter Shiels and Elizabeth Lemon I mentioned as possible parents for her, because of the Binnie Shiels baptism I found, also had a daughter Joan Shiells (hope that makes sense).

So do you think it looks likely that the Binnie Shiells baptism I have found is indeed my Robina? As her husband could of course been a witness to one of her nieces baptisms.

It is so hard to trace backwards once you get to a certain point, when records become scarce.

It does get so much harder doesn't it. Have you been able to trace the descendants of Robina and Robert's three daughters? Sometimes you can find grandparents' names being used for later children which can help to re-enforce your findings.

For example: Could this be daughter Alison married to a John Peter Anderson - marriage on 15 June 1861 South Leith, Midlothian. Children showing to them on IGI:

1. ROBERT ANDERSON Birth: 23 AUG 1862 Haddington
2. PETER SHIELS ANDERSON Birth: 10 JUN 1864 Haddington
3. WILLIAM SHIELS ANDERSON Birth: 08 MAR 1866 Haddington
4. ROBINA ALISON ANDERSON Birth: 24 APR 1868 Haddington
5. ROBINA JOAN ANDERSON Birth: 08 MAY 1872 Edinburgh

Thinking about it though, did Alison Paterson marry into the Anderson family, with mother Joan Shiells  :P Gets confusing at times - lots of potential similar names there!

yes I have all descendants will take a look and see any repeats of names.

Of course they only had daughters so now repeat of males names. But first daughter was called Elizabeth, perhaps after Elizabeth Lemon and second daughter was called Jane, after John's mother - Jane Reid.

daughter Alison Paterson married Peter Anderson the above children are theirs. The first Robina died age 1 from bronchities, so their next daughter they also named Robina.

now it does get confusing because Alison's mother was Robina Shiells and Peter's mother was Joan Shiells, who of course I believe are sisters, if Robina Shiells is indeed Binnie Shiells born to Peter Shiells and Elizabeth Lemon.
