Brilliant, thanks Mike! The list of Sheltons contains the people I was looking for as well as some offshoots. I will be studying the Surgue list for connections but the matthew and Elizabeth look right.

Thanks again and Merry Christmas,
Matt

Hi Guys
I'm a newbie to this chat, as a Surgey myself, also trying to sort out my ancestry I found these posts very interesting.
BTW I found it by a google search on John Surgey, he is the first name in my tree but I cannot find any info on him.
If anyone can help please let me know.
Thanks
Gary

Hi Mike
Thanks for the posted list.
However, this has made me realise I need to do more work.
This is the info I have so far:

John Surgey (father) dob ???

?????  (mother) dob ???

William Palmer Surgey (son) dob +-1818, married Mary Charlotte Gaisford in1851 in Hackney.

So I need to see if I can find birth certificate for William Palmer, maybe this will give me his mothers name and the spelling of "Surgey" they used. Then maybe find their birth & marriage certs.

Hope I'm on the right path and can actually find these certs.

Thankx again
Happy New Year
Gary

Gary

I have found these in the 1851 census:

Address: 2, Great Coram Street, Saint George Bloomsbury, Finsbury

SURGEY, John Bailey     Head,  Unmarried, age: 35,  born: 1816 Clapton, Middx, Profession: Artist
SURGEY, William P       Brother, Unmarried, age: 33, born: 1818 Clapton, Profession: Ship & Insurance Broker
FRANKLIN, Elizabeth    Servant, Unmarried, age: 30, born: 1821 Kensington, Profession: General Servant
HAYCROFT, Elizabeth   Servant, Unmarried, age: 27, born: 1824 Hampton, Profession: General Servant

The 1851 census was taken on 31/03/1851.

in the 1861 census.

Address: 6, Cobham Terrace, Swanscombe, Kent

SURGEY, William Palmer  Head Married  43 1818 Hackney, Middlesex
SURGEY, Mary Charlotte  Wife Married   39 1822 London
SURGEY, William               Son                 8  1853 Scholar Hackney, Middlesex
SURGEY, Thomas              Son                 6  1855 Scholar Hackney, Middlesex
SURGEY, Alfred Palmer      Son                 5  1856 Scholar Hackney, Middlesex
SURGEY, Mary Anna       Daughter           4  1857 Scholar Hackney, Middlesex
SURGEY, Norman Manner  Son                2  1859              Hackney, Middlesex
SURGEY, Edwin Barley       Son               1   1860              Hackney, Middlesex
INFANT, Infant                   Son              0(11Days) 1861  Kent
MOORE, Ann                    Widow            49 1812 Monthly Nurse Tetney, Gloucestershire
LITTLECHILD, Mary Little Servant           29 1832 Cook  Epping, Essex
HOLLAND, Charlotte        Servant           17 1844 Housemaid North Cray, Kent

The 1861 census was taken on 07/04/1861.

The marriage record shows:

Male Name: SURGEY, William Palmer
Female Name:  GAISFORD, Mary Charlotte
Registration District:  Hackney
County:  London
Year of Registration:  1851
Quarter of Registration:  Jul-Aug-Sep
Volume No:  3
Page No:  173

The marriage cert will show you their fathers name + the name of witnesses.
Birth certs are not available before September 1837 you can only find the parents names from parish records.

From the census records they seem to be consistent with the spelling of their name so it may be that the parents surname was the same but you can't assume anything in this game.

Hope this helps.
Mike

Hi Mike
Thanx for the info, it has confiremed a lot of what I already have, plus you have found some additional children.
Geez there's plenty of kids...you can see they never had telly:-)

OK I think I have also found another generation back, still need to double check this.

I have also found the illusive John Surgey (b1789) and wife, Anna Palmer (b1784) who I think is the father of William Palmer (b+-1818). They seem to from Middlesex so I will go and search for parish records for birth info.

This is all great fun!!!

Thanks again.

Hi Mike

Just found this link, would it be possible to check for any of the following surnames please...

Allen
Bradbury
Peck

Having tried at the Library I found the Registers almost impossible to read!

Many thanks
Knellie
