Help Please...From Russia to Canada 1908
« on: Tuesday 14 December 10 22:29 GMT (UK) »
Im looking for information on Joseph Leibel born in Russia Nov 10 1871
Joseph marries Madeline ??
Madeline was born Nov 1873 in Russia

Im looking for a marriage date.
Im also looking to see if there is a site were i can look up information?
Did Russia have Census? is there a site for Russia Census?
The Leibel family is a bit hard to follow, They were born in Russia, but
there tribe\background is German. I have found them in the U.S.A
then later found them in Saskatchewan, Canada.
Heres a list for Joseph and Madleine's children:

Bugaria born Oct 1894 Russia

Wendeline born March 1907 or 1901 Russia (Census for Canada 1911 doesnt make sence for the years for Wendelin, Wendelin was my Great great grandfather.

Annie born Nov 1902 U.S.A

Katherine June 1904 U.S.A

Madeline born Oct 1905 U.S.A

Johanna born Aug 1907 Saskatchewan

Helena born April 1909 Sask

Pauline born May 1912 Sask

Wendelin and Johanna cant both be born same year and one born in March the other born in Aug...And one born in Russia and the other born in Saskatchewan.

Any help would be great..Thanks

And Wendeline shows on the 1911 canada census as 10 years old, so that
would put his birth at 1901?

Assuming I have the correct family .....

According to the 1911 Census, which is free to view at the link below, the older chidren present in the household were born in Russia so they likely married there? Click on 'split view at the top of the transcription page to see birthplace info etc.

Saskatchwan doesn't have much on line for indexes but you can explore this link to their BMDs. If you meet the requirements for ordering a certificate, one for the Sask-born children may have a mmn.

It appears that the family must have entered Canada from the USA b/c they have children born there also. The 1911 Census indicates they arrived in Canada in 1908 but I haven't been able to find a border crossing at this point.

You're welcome.

Wendoline is 10 according to the Census. From my experience the enumerator generally put the year according to the age given and wrote in the birth month given by the parents. So that would put his birth year at approximately 1901.

You might also be able to find info from the USA births if you know where they occurred.

From the link previously given to Saskatchewan Vital Statistics it shows a birth for Johanna Leibel 8/8/1907 with parents Joseph Leibel and Magdelena Volk.

1916 census for Battleford, Sask
Joseph, 44 with wife Caroline 45 both born Russia and Wendall 16 also born Russia
Annie 14, Katie 12 and Maggie 11 are born in the USA
Jennie 10, Paulina 5, Joseph 17, Katie 13, Careg(?) 11 are all born Saskatchewan and all show a son or daughter relationship.  Joseph remarried and blended families??

There is also a death for Helena 1912/5/8 on the Saskatchewan Vital Statistics site.

There is a possible death for Magdalene Leibel 22 Sep 1908 in the Sask death index. There are no details as to location or age or anything. You would have to purchase the record. Too bad Sask doesn't have its marriage index on line yet.

It does, however, look like Joseph has a new wife in the 1916 Census. The extra children w/h been born in Sask prior to his arrival from the USA.

Are you in contact with the person who has a tree on Anc**try related to Bulgaria Leibel? There is also a private tree whose owner seems to be adding the same records.

One of the books from Our Roots has information on Wendell and his family.  His mother did die when he was young and his father remarried.
