Gubbata, the area still exists with the turn off between Ungarie and Lake Cargelligo. It is 22km down a red, dirt road. My car isn't suited to it, so I couldn't venture on down.

I called into the local council office and they were very helpful. However, I realised when I got back to Bathurst, that I'd asked them to check for 'Westley' 'Westleigh'. At least I think I did.

You may like to contact them yourself.  council[at]blandshire.nsw.gov.au

A property valuer said that changes/disappearance of names were not uncommon with smaller properties being bought out by large companies.

I'll be moving to Ungarie in April, so if all else fails I'll be able to contact the Family History Society. The librarian said that they keep old rates books, which could prove useful.

Hi Woodydog, Im the youngest daughter of Eric Pratt, son of Arthur & Violet Pratt.  If I can be of any help with info, let me know.  My Dad is interested in knowing family stuff and I was just doing a general search when your research came up.  I havent done any formal family research, but have asked questions of the living.  Most of the old family members have passed now though.  My dad and Uncle Allen are in their mid 70s.  And yes it was a big family with 16 Piddington siblings, 4 are now left (at the moment).  Some of the decendents talk and others have lost touch.  Anyway let me know.

This is for anyone else interested in the family legends.  I have messaged Woodydog with more detail.

James & Arthur (brothers) married Lillian & Violet (sisters).  James & Lillian had three children Eileen, Ian (called Don) & Evelyn (sometimes called Megan).
Arthur & Violet (called Suzie by the Piddington’s though I never knew her called that), both deceased, had three children Kathleen, Eric & Allen.  When James & Lillian died Arthur & Violet brought up their kids as well as their own, they were all close in age.

Pratt strain we originated from – Arthur & James were brought up in Halifax, Yorkshire.  Their mother was Isabella MAYLOR, their father was Benjamin PRATT.

Families in Australia often went into partnership together and associated with each other closely.  My Dad and Uncle Allen are best friends for instance. As was James & Arthur to an extent.  And you can tell that brothers and sisters often married brothers and sisters.

Share farming is a varying agreement between land owner and worker – depending on a ratio of ownership of the land used, the ownership of the machinery used, and who does the actual work – this determines the profits and the risks.  It was a common way of farming in Australia in Arthur’s day and in my Dad’s.

The properties called Wheatley, and Wheatleigh were called so because Wheatley was the name of a Viaduct that ran through the area of Halifax where James & Arthur came from and Wheatley was the birthplace of Benjamin, their father.  Wheatley at Gubbata was owned by James, Wheatleigh at Griffith was owned by Arthur.  These lots were both only small and did not contain enough land to make a real living, both went bust after bad seasons.  Arthur & Violet walked off the land owning a cultivator, horse and cart, 3 kids and nothing much else.  Lillian & her kids were left on the land while James went off to war.  She developed Cancer and was dying, the family went and picked her, the kids and their worldly possessions and brought them back to Peak Hill where she eventually died a couple of years later.

James and Lillian were married at “Maroomba”or “Marobah” depending on the date used, a property at Mungery, (next to Dooragog) not Mungery School.

Dooragog was called such because Henry Charles PIDDINGTON (Great Grandfather Piddington) said it was to have a open door policy for family. Door – a – Gog.

Enjoy.

I know Gubbata, I was born there, and I knew the Pratt family, although I was only about 4 at the time, Gubbata is in NSW, closest towns are Lake Cargelligo and Ungarie, its on the Ungarie/Narahadan rail line, there is very little left now.
The property that the Pratts had is no longer there, many of the original farmers went broke, and the farms were  consolidated with other farms, in my day the Pratt farm belonged to a family called Gibbons, however its since been sold and I don't know who owes it now.
I remember going to visit them, with my mother, in a horse and sulky, through the mallee bush. There was anumber of kids, and they had an old derilict car which we used to sit in and make ruum ruuum noises.
I never knew the father as he was in the army, later a prisnor of war, and I don't think they knew what happened to him for years.
I believe the family went to Peak Hill to live and I never saw them anymore

I didn't move up there in April -am doing so in December- but will be there for 2 weeks, as of this coming Saturday. I now have a large 4 X 4 that would love its first dirt road run. So, if there is anything you'd like me to take a photo of, let me know. Also, can do a library visit if you need.

I could do you a google earth reference to where the Pratt farm used to be, nothing much left now, but its a bit hard to find and I don't think theres anyone about now who would know about it.
Let me know if that would help, I have a couple of nephews live at Gubbata, but they wouldn't know about the Pratts, only old buggers like me would know
