*COMPLETED* Civil Registration Births/Parish Registers - BURNS/BYRNES
« on: Sunday 19 December 10 16:10 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

My great-grandfather, James Burns, was supposedly from Cork and born abt. 1866. I have been told by a cousin that he changed the spelling from Byrnes to Burns when he joined the Queens Own Cameron Highlander Regiment - maybe to sound more Scottish! His father was Thomas Burns/Byrnes.

Could somebody please do a look-up for me on the Civil Registration Index for Cork for James Byrnes born 1864 - 1867? If anyone has a resource for looking at Cork parish registers and finds a James Byrnes/Burns born to Thomas Byrnes/Burns, that would be even more amazing!

Thank you very much,

James

The civil BMD index is online of familysearch, also included are some extracted birth from the timeframe  - see :

   Introduction to Irish Records

Do you know what part of Co. Cork your James was born ?

For parish record searches you need to know which religion the family were, and also where they lived - i.e. parish or townland. RC Parish records for part of Co. Cork (most south west county and city) are available on www.irishgenealogy.ie

Thank you.

There are so many conflicting and outdated articles online about how to find Irish records.

I do not know what part of Co. Cork he was from, unfortunately. I think they were RC as he attended mass when he moved to London. I will try these and I hope that one day irishgenealogy.ie will have all the Co. Cork records! That would really narrow them down. Thank you again and Merry Xmas

The problem with the surname Byrne/Byrnes is that it is a very common surname in Ireland, so there could be a number of James Byrnes with father Thomas born around the right time.

Do you know the Occupation for Thomas ?

Yes. On James' marriage certificate in 1898 it states that he was a Railway Signalman.
