Might be a bit late in the day but did you ever find out where Hotspur & Percy streets were in the St. Peters area of Newcastle?

I realise this is an old thread, but it has been resurrected, so here on the 1896 large scale town plan, is the Hare and Hounds on the corner of Hotspur Street (running N–S) and St Lawrence Road (running W–E).

And here is a side-by-side view showing the modern location. Note however that on this OS map (not sure of the exact edition, but presumably a later 25 inch map) Hotspur Street is renamed as Potter Street. The Hare and Hounds is still there.

Good to see my old original post being resurrected.
I will encourage me to re-visit my research on our Byker ancestors.
Many thanks for the recent posts.
I'll report back if I have anything more to add.

I have concluded that Percy Street was renamed to Hotspur Street, which was later renamed to Potter Street.

Newspaper references:
"Percy Street, St Peters" go from 1835 to 1868
"Hotspur Street, St Peters" go from 1872 to 1906 (an article announcing the renaming to Potter Street).

On the large scale town plan of 1896 the Hare and Hounds is at the north end of Hotspur Street. In the 1861 census the Hare and Hounds is the first site listed in Percy Street (which is preceded by Chapel Street). In the 1871 census Jonas Bamborough, innkeeper, is in Percy Street (no name of inn given), but we know from newspapers that he was of the Hare and Hounds.

Hi Bykerlads, out of curiosity I lived in Byker from 1954 (born there) until 1966. What names do you have in your tree?

Alan, thanks for the info about Jonas Bambrough, a name appearing in a number of generations of the family.
And indeed, in 1853/4/5 there was mention in the press of the name in connection with housebreaking and counterfeit coinage! The Bambroughs were glassmakers by trade and jn 1871 Jonas is "publican and glassmaker"

Paul, our immediate Byker relatives had left in the mid 1930's, Joseph and Eliza Mary West and their son Herbert Edward. They moved to Huddersfield. Previously they had a shop on the Walker Road.
The Wests in Byker go back to at least 1780. In 1841 they were at Dents Hole and Birds Nest, Other names are Spatchett, McDonough, Bambrough, Russell, Reay., Wolff.

Thanks Bykerlad, don’t recognise any of those names but worth an ask. 👍👍
