Galloway towns
« on: Saturday 25 December 10 07:52 GMT (UK) »

I'm trying to trace the family of someone who said she was born in Galloway in 1813 (the family were living near Liverpool by 1818)

Does anyone know of a list of parishes specific to Galloway at that time?

Regards
Bevo

Hello Bevo  :)

I'm not sure if you've found your listing. Galloway has been described by Innes Macleod (1997) as 'the area from the Mull of Galloway and Loch Ryan in the west to the Solway and the Nith at Dumfries in the east' - thus the counties of Wigtownshire and Kirkcudbrightshire rather than Dumfriesshire -

Parishes would be those listed here:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/WIG/index.html
and
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/KKD/parishes.html#ListOfParishes

Also a map here:

http://scotlandsfamily.com/parish-map-wigtown.htm

Hope this helps

Galloway is the old name for the area now comprising what was the town counties of Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire (actually it included part of Ayrshire)
Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire are noe part of the area called Dumfries and Galloway
Have look at www.imchad.freeola.com
The links bar on the left has a button to take you to short photo tour of amny of the towns and villages.  There is also a button linking with lists of all the parishes of the D&G area.

Another source of data for you to consider is the website of Dumfries & Galloway Family History Society at www.dgfhs.org.uk
