Lichfield cathedral
« on: Tuesday 28 December 10 14:38 GMT (UK) »
I am, trying to trace the marriage details of Thomas Moorcroft [ or Morecroft] born c. 1711 and Mary Wood born c. 1722.  I think they married in Lichfield Cathedral in April 1748.
If that marriage can be found then I would love to have details of parents, witnesses etc. if they are recorded.
Can anyone help please?
Many thanks.

Generally most pre 1837 marriages only give the couples names, date, status, whether of the parish and  witnesses, no parents or addresses are given but you can sometimes get luck with the witnesses name.

You have probably already found on Family Search the wedding of Thomas Moorecroft and Mary Wood on 21st April 1748 The Cathedral, Lichfield? There are 2 christenings of a Thomas Moorcroft (March 1712) and Thomas Moorecroft (12 October 1712), both at Church Broughton, Derby.

I have an ancestor also reputedly married in Lichfield Cathedral around that time. Would they have to have been members of the clergy to be allowed to marry there? Would Lichfield Cathedral have the original registers still on site?

Thank you both for your replies.
I did sort of know that pre 1837 details were scarce but thought [hoped!] that if it was Lichfield Cathedral there might have been a fuller version.
I also wondered if a marriage there had to signify clergy.  But if it is my Thomas and Mary then they seemed to have spent the rest of their lives in Mavesyn Ridware.  So perhaps I should check the clergy there - unless it was Mary that was the daughter of a clergyman in the Cathedral.   And, as one of you mentioned, see if the original registers in the Cathedral are available somewhere.

Lichfield Archives certainly have the fiches of the Cathedral records, plus of course they have the Bishops Transcripts - originals (complete with mouse-nibblings etc.), and if there was a clergyman involved and he was ordained in Luchfield, then they have the records, because Lichfield Archives house the records of the Diocese of Lichfield.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

The original register is at the Lichfield Record Office and the wedding is indeed recorded there both in the original register and a printed transcript.  It reads 1748 April 21 Thomas Moorecroft and Mary Wood.Mavesyn Ridware. There are no further details.  There is no related marriage allegation and bond. One of them may have been a resident of the Cathedral Close and the other from Mavesyn Ridware.  A printed version of the Mavesyn Ricdware registers gives baptisms in 1749 William (son of Thomas Moorcroft and Mary), 1750 Mary (ditto), 1753 Thomas (ditto), 1755 George (ditto) and then in 1801 Mary Moorecroft buried.  I don't know if this fits in with what you have already found but hope it may be helpful.
