Oh and another thing my dad suggested that maybe he had another family because of the age. How would I work that out?

Marriage certificate will list status (single/bachelor, widowed or divorced).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

How will you know if he has had children though? Will it say that in the coleraine library too?

hello owen, If you get the marriage cert of hugh smith age 65/70 approx and margaret thompson age 27 approx, married apr-june 1904 and registered at limavady registration district it will answer many questions for you. (name of both fathers, and if hugh was previously married.) write to GENERAL REGISTER OFFICE, oxford house, 49-55 chichester st. belfast bt1-4hl. You can also order on-line at GENERAL REGISTER OFFICE.

Owen can look at the church records on microfilm at Coleraine Library to obtain information. Otherwise, the cheaper option is to get a research copy of the marriage for 4 euros from Roscommon (less than £3.50).

Ok thank you. Think I will head to the coleraine library though.

Went to the Coleraine library today for a short time and looked at the microfilm.

I have discovered that my Great grandmother was baptised in 1906 in Balteagh Presbyterian Church which is outside Limavady.

Her father is listed as Hugh Smith and her mother is listed as Margaret Thompson. (matches up with 1911 census)

I did not stay long so I did not get to go back further but I believe that Hugh's father may be Edward Smith based on the marriage record of Hugh and Margaret Thompson on Rootsireland.ie.

Not too sure who the mother is though.

Owen,
On 24 April 1904 Hugh Smith married Margaret Thompson in Bovevagh church of Ireland.
On 27 Mar 1843 Edward Smith married Mary Ann Irwin in Bovevagh Presbyterian Church. From the 1908 pension records there was a family in the townland of Drumadreen. between Limavady and Dungiven called Smith:-
Edward Smith
Mary Ann Smith
Thomas Smith aged 10
Hugh Smith aged 3
James Smith aged 1

Regards

Edit: The above information on the Smith family is from the 1851 census.
Stewart, Irwin, Morrison, Haslett, Murrell - Dungiven area Co. Londonderry
Browne, Barrett -Co.Armagh
Neil, Smyth _Co. Antrim
