Baptism Look up
« on: Saturday 01 January 11 03:17 GMT (UK) »
Happy New Year!!!
Looking for baptism records of Mary Ann Turin (could be Turpin) Fisher baptised 15 May 1849.
LDS entries show (1) baptised St Nicholas Brighton (2) St Johns Brighton, both same date, name etc.

Would someone please be kind enough to look this up for me?
Thanks

Perhaps there is even a little bit more on this one for it looks as though she was a twin.
The June quatrter of 1849 FreeBMD for Brighton has a registration of 2 Fisher un-named births on the same page (ref 7  329), one male the other female.
The un-named male then appears in the deaths for the same quarter (ref 7  233) as does a named Mary Ann Fisher but she is one page later on ref 7  234.
Could it be that her brother was stillborn but Mary survived for enough time to be both named and baptised?

Hi Kerry & Roy
Thanks to both of you for looking into this for me.  It is most likely now that I have been going down the wrong path with this one, with Roy finding Mary Ann's death entry.  I can at least eliminate this one from my list and move on.

Your help is very much appreciated.
Kind regards

If you give us a bit more info on the correct Mary Ann Fisher, we may be able to help anyway.

Hi Roy
Thanks for your offer to help further.  Sorry about the delay in replying - internet problems.  If you are still willing to look into this, here is the story....

The Mary Ann Turin Fisher was a long shot.  I am trying to find a Mary Ann Smart who gives her birth year in a range of dates from 1846 - 1854 and born in Brighton; her parents William Smart, a gardener and Ellen Turner.  My problem... there doesn't appear to be a William Smart / Ellen Turner marriage (Free BMD) however I did find in 1852 a marriage to Ellen Turpin (hence the long shot enquiry re M A Turin Fisher) and another 1852 marriage to Eliza Hayler aka Ellen.  1871 Census has a Mary Smart 24, with William Smart 51, widower in Brighton Sussex.  If this is the correct MA Smart she was obviously born prior to her mother marrying William Smart and must have taken his name after 1852.  So her registration must be under another name but which one???
St Nicholas Brighton has a baptism for Mary Ann Smart (mother Eliza Smart) in 1852 and another Mary Smart in 1852 (parents William & Georgina Smart).

1851C has an Eliza Hayler & son James living in same household as William & Georgina Smart and there is a death entry for a Georgina Smart in 1852 at Brighton, so this William may have married this Eliza.   Haven't been able to trace any Mary Ann ??? in 1851 or 1861 living with her parents.

If you are still keen, any help would be appreciated

At the moment I am just thinking aloud to organise my thoughts.
The ages your Mary Ann Smart gives on various documents suggest she was born in Brighton sometime between 1845-1855 and her parents were William Smart a gardener and possibly Ellen (Ellen aka Helen or Eleanor).
You have no birth cert, parents m cert, knowledge of siblings, and are dubious of some info on various censuses.  Presumably the only info you feel comfortable with so far comes from a copy Marriage cert you have obtained.  Do you have an age that can be deduced from a death cert?

I should also point out that many people say they were born in Brighton when their birthplace was actually in the parishes around it.  Places like Hove, Preston, Patcham, and even as far out as Shoreham.  If the latter, you may like to look at Mary Ann Smart (from Southwick?) who was the 6 year old niece of John Taylor (1851 census HO 107/1646/571) who could fit the bill.  Her birth appears under Steyning on FreeBMD as does another Mary Ann Smart also from that area but born in 1853.  It could even be that during your researches, one has become confused with the other.

Hi Roy G,
Thank you for your suggestions.  I plan to now subscribe to the Census collections and go through them again bearing in mind your suggestion that 'Brighton' could be extended to any of the local parishes.

The 1851C for MA Smart at the Taylors is a possibility, she is also there in 1861 however have not been able to establish a connection with the family, as yet.  Taylor could also have been misconstrued as 'Turner'?.

MA Smart's death cert says 64 in Dec 1912 (Born abt 1848)
Marriage 1: 28 in March 1874 (Born abt 1846)
Marriage 2: 37 in Dec 1885 (Born abt 1848)

I will see what turns up and go from there.  Hopefully I will be able to get certs to verify that I have the correct person.
Thanks again
