Janet Ferguson Marriage To John Evans

The following information was sent to me from a fellow researcher from a Shropshire Family History site:

Details: soldier Shropshire Militia, m Janet FERGUSON, Mar 1798, Inveresk ELN

Shropshire FHS told me the abbreviation ELN is the 'Chapman Code' for the County of East Lothian in Scotland. They suggested asking a Scottish Message Board to see if anyone is able to look up the entry for me or tell me where you can search for it myself.

I would like some more information if possible please.

This looks like an entry for the marriage on IGI:

JANET FERGUSON and JOHN EVAN Marriage: 07 MAR 1798 in Inveresk With Musselburgh, Midlothian

You can view the original image of the Old Parish Register entry on the pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  This is all before the start of official registration in Scotland from 1855 so the original entry on the register may not include any more information than you already have unfortunately.

Thank you for your reply ~ this is the first time I have ventured into Scotland ~ so I will need to do some enquiring as to the subscription costs etc.

Could I ask you if you think that Janet Ferguson on the birth of her son in 1801 would have called herself 'Jane' (no maiden name I'm afraid) but I do think it is her as the Ferguson name has come down the family.  John Evans was a Soldier in the Shropshire Militia but their son John Evans was born in Brading Isle of Wight. The Militia were defending the Solent.

Thank you Monica that is really helpful.

By the way the Evans surname is not listed on my interests as it is connected to my Jones branch, my Grandfather being John Ferguson Jones, his Grandmother Anne Evans married Edwin Jones and I at last found the Ferguson connection by Anne's brother named John Ferguson Evans.

My mother has always wondered why her father had a Scottish middle name and I would love to say I have discovered the reason, but I can't get any proof.  Yet another brick wall it would seem......

Hello listers

A very kind gentleman sent me a copy of the original entry of marriage of Janet Ferguson to John Evans of the Shropshire Militia.

However interestingly of the ten marriages in the relevant page of the parish record, all in March 1798, only one marriage is non military and in seven the bridegrooms were soldiers in the Shropshire Militia. Does anyone know what they might have been doing in Musselburgh at the time? (the marriages were recorded for Inveresk and Musselburgh).
