Ordsall Hall, Salford
« on: Monday 03 January 11 00:50 GMT (UK) »
I was just wondering if anyone has any knowledge on Ordsall Hall in Salford - I have looked on the internet but haven't found anything relevant to what I am looking for.

I found an ancester, a Martha Taylor along with her parents (Joseph and Ellen Alice) and siblings on the 1891 census having their name of road/street as Ordsall Hall and wondered whether they would have lived there as Servants, but why would the whole family live there?  It looks like there were three families living at this same address.

Anyone any ideas?

Cheers

Chrissy

Hi Chrissy

There is an article on Wikipedia about the hall which might give you an idea as to what became of it. There is a link on it to Salford Council's website with a contact no. and e-mail address for the Local History Library. They are usually quite helpful.

I don't know the exact details but I know it has had a varied career over the years with quite a few different uses.

Incidently, what are the occupations of Joseph Taylor and the other families that lived there.

Thanks Cancan.

Eric, I emailed Salford Council yesterday and am awaiting a reply from them.

It does seem that the hall has been used for a variety of things, but nothing specific in 1891.  Joseph was a "Hall Keeper" and two other occupations of other families was a bricklayer and a warehouseman.  I am thinking maybe they lived in the Servants quarters because I can't think of any other reason they would be living there!!
