John Aquila Brown 1781-1842
« on: Monday 03 January 11 11:47 GMT (UK) »
Please can anyone help me find out about the birth and parentage of John Aquila Brown.  The 1841 Census shows his address as Regents Park, London, gives his age as 60, and a county of birth as "S" (for Scotland?).  He married Ann Eliza Truss in 1805 in Westminster and had 6 children, William John, Mary Ann, Daniel, Samuel, Thomas Wittwer, and David.  There was a grandson born in 1846 who was also called John Aquila, but he died in 1849.  John Aquila Brown died between June 1841 and May 1842, but I cannot find a record of it.  There are many references to him on the internet as being a popular prophetic author.  He wrote two books,  the first being "Even-Tide" published in 1823, and secondly, "The Jew: The Master-Kay of the Apocalypse" published in 1827.  He is variously described as The Rev John Brown, or, a British silversmith turned prophetic student, or, definitely not a clergyman of the Church of England.  Very confusing!  I seem to be at a dead end, and as I am a complete novice would welcome any assistance, even just to point me in the right direction to go next.  Many thanks

Hi katy,

Firstly welcome to Rootschat!

I would like to help you, and want to start from the beginning, Brown is a common name, so can you give me the reference for the 1841 Census sheet where you have found John Aqulia Brown, and then I can look for myself, to make sure, I am looking for the right chap??!

Many thanks,

Hi Copperbeech5, Thanks for the reply, am struggling a bit with the website so please forgive any errors.  Not quite sure what you mean by reference, but I found it in Ancestry UK by searching his daughters name "Mary Brown" born 1809.  Civil parish: St Pancras, sub reg: Regents Park.  Their address was 26 Chester Terrace and John Brown (independant) lived there with his daughter and 5 servants!

Hi Valda, I am really grateful for the information, I thought I had found him alive in 1841 but I must have been wrong (John Brown is a very common name isn't it).  I will get copies as you suggested and thank you for the links, that helps a lot.  Best wishes

Hi

The baptism of this child

DAVID BROWN
Birth:  01 JAN 1816
Christening:  27 FEB 1816   Jewin Street Independent, London
Father:  JOHN AGUILA BROWN
Mother:  ANN ELIZA

should also be on BMDregisters which would give you an occupation for his father.

Thomas Wittwer Brown's registration of birth in 1812 in Dr William's Library register is also there and probably the other children are there as well.

Regards

Valda
