Kilmackerrin National School, Kerry
« on: Thursday 06 January 11 09:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,
Can anyone advise me how I can find out the date that Kilmackerrin National School (Kerry) was officially opened. The plaque from the school has gone missing, and I would dearly like to find out the date it opened. I have searched the Internet, spoken to Kerry County Council, all to no avail.

Regards,
       Mike.

Mike
Some time ago I started a project (never finished) to see where the Kerry National school registers were held and from what date.
I got a lot of information from the Board of Education files in the National Archives Bishop St Dublin.
This is what I have for Kilmackerrin  Roll No 10075 - Ist application for a grant from the Board of Education maded 4 Jun 1868 so the school must have been opened some time after that - it usualy took one or two years after the grant was made for the school to open.
You could try e-mailing Bishop St if you can't get there in person to check it out further. I don't know if they will deal with individual research requests though.
You could also try Tralee County Library - I know they hold some National school records that the Archives haven't there.

Hi anncalre,
I have recently visited Caherciveen Library, and they discovered some old documents including some of the School registers, and one of the documents had 1873 as the date the school opened. Thanks for your help and guidance.
