1841 census Sarah SETH
« on: Friday 15 April 05 08:09 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am hoping someone can find the Seth family of Huntingdonshire for me in the 1841 census. I don't have an address, but it is quite an unusual name. Their daugther, Sarah would have been about 14 at the time. Thanks in anticipation...

You're asking for a miracle! The 1841 Hunts is not name indexed (in fact it's not indexed at all!) so without a place name it's an impossible task.

There were no male Seth's or offspring of a Seth in 1861 who were born in Hunts - just two wives who were born in Hunts and married out of county Seths and were living in other counties. Only two Seths were living in Hunts, both lodgers/servants who were born outside the county.  So no evidence in 1861 that the Seths were ever in Hunts.

Sorry!

David

Hi there,

I found a Jonathan Seth who got married in 1825 at Yaxley and a Sarah Seth who got married in 1833 at Caldecot.  Might help to narrow the search area  ;)

Thanks Mooncrystal - You could be on to something there. Seth does not seem to be a common name.
Cheers! Treesearcher

The Jonathan Seth who married in Yaxley was, according to the 1861 census, born in Stoke Doyle, Northants, and the family was living in Fleet Lincs. His wife Mary was the one born at Yaxley.

Who did Sarah Seth marry - we might be able to find her in 1861 to get her place of birth?

The BVRI has a couple more Seth references in Hunts:

Frances Seth, age 23 daughter of George Seth married Joseph Harriss age 25 at Farcett on 4 Sept 1853

Emma Seth ag 22 dau of George Seth marr Thomas Head 24 at Molesworth on 21 Dec 1864

And a later one

Ann Alice Seth age 36 dau of George Seth marr Ambrose Smith 26 at Fletton on 17 May 1898

Looking at 1861, the plot thickens! Frances was also born at Stoke Doyle Northants, as was Emma Seth! There is also a George Seth born 1804 at Stoke Doyle in 1861, still living in Stoke Doyle, with a wife Frances.
Ann Alice appears in 1871 aged 9 at Fleet Lincs, where she was born, dau of George age 38 publican born Benfield Northants (I wonder if he was the son of Jonathan above?)

But all Seths in Hunts in this period  appear to be strays from Northants, with no indigenous ones (unless Sarah was a local)

Regards

David

David - You don't want to know....She married a John Brown! They were possibly living at Newborough, Hunts. by then. They had a child there in 1863 named Francis Henry.
Cheers

1861
Richard Jinks age 68 born Caldecote Hunts with wife Sarah age 46 born Lutton Hunts. So this is the only Seth I've seen so far with a Hunts birthplace, although Lutton appears to be a mile inside Northants with Caldecote a mile the other side of the current county boundary in Hunts as was.

I wonder though if we've not been chasing our tails here, as Newborough is in Northants and not Hunts. It's in Peterborough registration district which included parishes in 4 counties, but Newborough was in the Northants part.

Which might explain why we can't find your Seths in Hunts - they were part of all these Northants families we've been finding!

regards

David
