Gloucestershire Archives lookup please
« on: Saturday 08 January 11 07:40 GMT (UK) »
Would someone please be able to do a lookup for me at the Gloucestershire Archives for the following?

George Hawker, 76, Cleeve Hill, Stonemason
Date of Committal - 3 Oct 1865
Reference No. - Q/Gc6/5
Gaol

Any information about why, where and for how long he was in gaol, would be wonderful.  Any information at all really, as I think this is my ggg grandfather.

Many thanks,
Alison  :)

Hi Alison,

this isn't from Gloucestershire Archives, but is perhaps referring to the same man:

England and Wales Criminal Registers
Michaelmas Quarter Sessions held at Gloucester
17 October 1865

George Hawker
Offence: Larceny
No. of previous convictions: 0
Sentence: 1 month not to hard labour

From The Bristol Mercury, Saturday, October 21, 1865
Gloucestershire Michaelmas  Session

...George Hawker, one month for stealing 2s. from Edward Phillimore, at Cheltenham.....

It could be my man, Galium,

The date's 2 weeks after the committal date.  Not to hard labour - my man was 76 by the archive index date, 73 by mine, which I imagine was a very old man back in 1865.

Just imagine, had it been 50 years earlier, he would probably have been transported.

Thanks,
Alison  :D

If there is someone who has the time to check the actual archive, I'd be grateful.  Some time ago, trawling the net, I came across this conviction which at the time I didn't think was relevant, stupidly didn't record the website, and which of course I now can't find again.  I remember something about the sentence being 3 months for larceny.

I'm intrigued as to whether this is the same offence as mentioned in post #2.
