1841 Census look-up please - WILSON and WIGSTON in Coventry
« on: Friday 15 April 05 13:08 BST (UK) »
I would be grateful if you could help me with the following.

Firstly I am trying to trace John Wilson, born @1803 (38 in 1841) He was an Inn Keeper/Licensed Victualler but I am not certain where he was living/working in Coventry in 1841 or any other details apart from the fact he probably had a son Thomas or Tom about 2 years old. Any additional information from the census would be very helpful.

Secondly I would also be grateful if you could look up William Wigston, another Licensed Victualler for me. I think that he would be running the Fox Inn in Cook Street, Coventry together with wife Ann (@31 in 1841) and they would have had a child, William, who would have been 1 year old. There was possibly a Thomas Wigston ( William's father?) also living with them. Again any confirmation of this plus any additonal information would be very helpful.

Many thanks in advance.

Regards

Julie

Hi,

I had a look on the 1841 census and found the following.

living in spon end

John Wilson Publican 35
Edward wilson weaver 70
Lucy wilson 30
Thomas Wilson 2

There was also a number of other people living with them including Eliza boyer a servant(15)

As for the Wigston's there wasn't a William, the only ones I can find at the moment is Thomas wigston 69, wheelwright, Charles wigston 20, wheelwright and Ann Cooke House keeper.
Living at the Bull and Anchoor , Rood lane.

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much indeed!

The information on John is really helpful - by 1851 he was running the Fox Inn in Cook Street and married to Ann Wigston but with various assorted children whose ages/names didn't make sense . My theory was that both had been married previously and it looks as though in John's case he was married to Lucy. That's a real help.

The Wigston side continues to be a bit of a puzzle - but again thanks for some more pieces - even if it doesn't confirm my original theory that Ann's first husband ran the Fox Inn and John took the premises over when he married her (though still a pub connection with the Bull & Anchor?). Back to the drawing board!
