Frederick Jackson Tapu/(Te)Puru Thames: Completed thanks!
« on: Thursday 13 January 11 02:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone, I've been trying to find some info about my great-great grandfather Frederick Jackson who was a mariner who lived in Tapu and Puru in thames in the late 1870s to 1910s.

I was wondering if someone calls themselves a "settler" does that mean they were born in another country, and if so how do I go about finding birth certificates and what ship and when they came to nz.
I have managed to find quite a lot about newspaper articles from the papers past websites which were very interesting.

I know he was born in 1838 (don't know where), married Eliza Harper in 1872 in nz, they had 11 children, had land and a boat in tapu and puru and died in 1913 and would like to find more info but am a bit stuck now, I'm new to this and hoping someone can help me
thanks,
Zalecia

Hi Zalecia

  ... and welcome.   :)

Unfortunately a New Zealand marriage record dated 1872 only offers minimal information (that is, it does not include details such as place of birth nor names of parents of bride and groom.)

My suggestion would be that you firstly purchase a copy of the death record for Frederick JACKSON (1913) to see what information that contains.   [Be sure to order a "printout" rather than the certificate, as this gives more detail. ]   Printout can be ordered at following site.

School records? have you got those
looks like possibles at Tapu/Kereta
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~babznz/tapukeretaschool.html
We can give you fuller school records that give birtrhdates and time at school, several children also attended school at Thames

Settler means usually came here,

Electoral rolls? do you have these
heres one example in 1885COROMANDEL 755 JACKSON Frederick Residential Hastings boatman
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~althea/Coromandel%20Electoral%20Roll%201885%20surnames%20A%20to%20K%20Surnames%20sorted.htm
Would you like other rolls?

The Treasury Thames is always after pioner families so you may be interested in submitting a pioneer form

Auckland City libraries passenger list has one possible
Name JACKSON, Frederick
Vessel EXCELSIOR: July 7 1871

but being a boatman he could have been a crew member, in which case it is much harder to find the ship he came on

Intention to Marry may help to give how long in area

We have some very clued up english experts that follow the threads so they may be able to locate some possible births, so will post the Memorial transcription

Frederick Jackson mariner born 8th May 1838 died 5th January 1913plus 2 infants

Thanks all for the great info! I was amazed at the amount of newspaper articles I found about him and his family in the Thames star, about 40! Yes my Nana had the info about Tapu school written down in a book we found after she died, so I've seen that before thanks, Charles was her father who is on that list. She also found out that Frederick was buried in the Tapu cemetery but I can't find any info about this cemetery (like where he was buried) I've never been to Tapu so don't know how big it is. I will one day like to visit the treasury in Thames it great that they have it now, since he had so many children I'm hoping one of my distant relations has more info that they have given to the treasury. I'll try and follow up the other info you have given me too

thanks everyone
Zalecia
