this is what you can expect to find on marriage cert for civil registration - July 1837 onwards

No dates of birth, no names of mothers.

To find a marriage reference, it's probably easier to use FreeBmd

That way you can put in groom's name, wife's first name and registration district - Cardiff - which cuts down the possibles.

FreeBMD will only show you from 1837 ....  you might strike lucky and find some info on Freereg website

Even if you find when John and Rachel married and get their marriage certificate this isnt going to prove anything is it as all that the marriage record will show will be Johns Fathers name and occupation which you already know, but it would give you Rachels maiden name and also details of her Father ....

What information is it you are trying to find proof of ??
