Rumney parish registers - Jenkins
« on: Thursday 13 January 11 07:57 GMT (UK) »
Someone who helped my on ancestry told me about this site. It came highly recommended!

I'm trying to find more info on my Welsh relatives. I was hoping to get a lookup on either of these two names as I've found out their dates of baptism.

Mary Jenkins, baptised 16th March 1834 Rumney parish

Henry Jenkins, baptised 17 April 1842 Rumney parish

Unsure of either's exact birthdates.

What I know:
Their parents are
David Jenkins, born abt 1811 in Glamorgan county, Shoemaker
Lydia/Lidia (Jenkins) born 20 Mar 1811 in Wales - 4 Oct 1880 in Minersville, PA, USA

Siblings in Wales:
John born 1838 (though he may have died young and not be mentioned when Henry was born)
David born 1839

What I hope to find out:
At the very least, Lydia's maiden name.

Any birthdates/places for those mentioned.
A parent name or two of Lydia and David though I imagine that's rarely on a baptism or birth record for their grandchildren.

Thanks!
Rich Jenkins

Welcome to Rootschat!  ;D

This looks to be the 1841 census entry for the family

Gabalva hamlet, Llandaff, Glamorgan HO107/1418/2 folio 32 pg 24
David Jenkins 30 shoemaker
Lidiah 30
Mary 7
John 3
David 2
/Elvira Walters 13
John Smith 20 ag lab
all except Lidiah & Elvira born in county
1841 doesn't give places of birth, only county, or family relationships and ages over 15 are meant to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years.

I haven't spotted them as yet in 1851. Had they already left by then?

Most likely birth registration for Henry
Henry Jenkins june qtr 1842 Cardiff vol 26 pg 355

A copy of this birth certificate would give you his mother's maiden name and his exact date of birth.

I think the Elvira in the household is a clue as there's a possible marriage in St Mellons 15/5/1833 of a David Jenkins of Pentyrch and a Lydia Walters.
IGI extracted batch C023991 for St Mellons has baptisms for
Lydia Walter bp 14/4/1811 dau of John & Mary
Elvira Walter bp 25/1/1828 same parents
There are more siblings in the same batch.

think this may be Lydia's parents in 1841

Hendre Farm, St Mellons, Monmouthshire HO107/751/13 folio 10 pg 15
John Walters 60 farmer
Mary 58
Hannah 32
Elizabth Edmunds 21 female servant

only Mary noted as not being born in county.

There's a possible marriage in the parish of Machen  in 1804 of a John Walter

Thanks so much

Before I read through this, I just wanted to make sure I replied really quick on where they were since I forgot to mention:

David and Lydia moved to America sometime after Henry's birth. Henry actually died in America's Civil War. They lived in Tamaqua East Ward, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania in 1850. Then in Minersville, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania in 1860, 1870, and 1880.

So, I guess the next step is to order a birth certificate for Henry Jenkins to double check this. Where can I do that online?

Just wanted to update on this

I received Henry's birth certificate in the mail. Lydia is, in fact, Lydia Walters!

I'm quite happy about that. One thing I was thinking is: do Wales marriage certificates have dates of birth or just bride/groom and parents' names? Because I was thinking I could find out when John got married and order his certificate although I'm not sure where to search for both him and his wife, Rachel. I tried searching for just John Jenkins on ancestry.com and came up with quite a few matches around the time period they may have married.

I had used some site to search for bride and groom name, but I can't remember what it is right now..
