Place name help please
« on: Thursday 13 January 11 10:22 GMT (UK) »
I was so excited to break through to the 1700's yesterday !
I found a birth in 1781 in Fodderty R&C and I cant read the place name, it is probably a farm or big house.(Have tried to post it onto deciphering but failed, will have to wait till kids get home!!)

It looks like kinniteil or rinnittel ?

All help appreciated
Cheers

Hi there

I've had a look in WJ Watson's "Place names of Ross and Cromarty" and there are a few possibilities in Fodderty parish:

Kinnettes
Kinnellan
Knockfarrel
Keppoch

I think the first two look the most likely from what you've been able to decipher so far - let me know if you'd like any further info about them from Watson's book.

Best wishes

Thanks very much Lynn, looking at your findings I think it is probably the first one. The entry I was looking at was in OPR and had been squeezed as an after thought between other entries an was tiny writing. You really are a whizz with that book as you have answered my questions before. I realised then that I have it but could never understand how to use it, its very difficult to read (or is it just me?)

Anyway thanks a million for your help, your a star.
