William Anderson born 1823 Horncliffe.
« on: Saturday 15 January 11 11:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to find some record of the birth of my GG Grandfather William Anderson born around 1823 in Horncliffe, Northumberland.
He married Margaret Scott in 1848 in Durham, his father's name was given as James, occupation 'Pitman'.
In 1851 they are living in Durham St Giles, with two children, William's place of birth is Northumberland and William is a coalminer.

William sails to Australia in 1857 and Margaret later joins him. Their son Thomas is born in Australia in1864 and Williams place of birth is given as Horncliffe Scotland, his occupation is 'Miner'.

Williams death in 1910 gives no record of his parents names.

I have tried FreeReg and Family Search but cannot come up with anything, nor can I find a definite 1841 census record for William.

Any help would be appreciated.

hi
Horncliff was in the parish of Norham and Norham was a detached part of County Durham in those days,so any records would probably come under Durham.

There are a few Anderson families having the children baptised in Norham C of E but none with a father's name of James.

I have dissenter births there was a George and an Andrew Anderson  of Horncliffe having the children's births recorded in the Norham parish register but that one seems to have a big skip from 1821 to 1847 but that could be because of whoever was the curate/minister there as later ones there is a note that the curate asked the archdeacon in Lindisfarne if that was all right as it seemed to have been a custom of this parish.  No William Anderson son of James though.

Hi
Thanks for your replies, I have widened my search a bit to include Durham but no luck as yet.

I wonder if he could have been baptised just over the river in Scotland.

His marriage cert definitely says father James, his first son is James, second is George after the wifes father, the first daughter is Isabella, so I am wondering if his mother could have been Isabella. Plenty of John's married to Isabella haveing William's, but no James.

Hi,

You must be up late, it's 11 AM here.

Diddy the Baptisms looks right but what is SP?

But the census record is a repeat of William's own childrens names so it makes me think it could be them, given that William is a coal miner on the census. I wonder could James wife Ann Graham have died and he remarried Isabella.

The family from 1841 census were living in Horncliffe at around the right time.

Some baptisms at the United Presbyterian Chapel in Spittal.

1819. Henry, son of James Anderson and of Isabella, his wife, of Hornclif, Parish of Tweedmouth, County of Durham, born 9th, baptized 26th October.

1821. George, son of James Anderson and Isabella, his wife, of Hornclif, Parish of Norham, born 17th, baptized 30th June.

1827. James, son of James Anderson and Isabella, his wife, of Shoreswood, Norham Parish, was born November 20th 1827.

1829. Mary, daughter of James Anderson and of Isabella, his wife, of Shoreswood, Norham Parish, was born December 23rd 1829.

1833. Margaret, daughter of James Anderson and of Isabella, his wife, of Shoreswood, Norham Parish, was born December 3rd 1833.

No sign of births/baptisms for the William (1823) or Frances (1825) from 1841 census.

Mum Mum, is the Pitman occupation on the marriage cert, Williams occupation, or his father James occupation, or both?

Alan.
