Names on Census Forms ( NOW CLOSED )
« on: Saturday 15 January 11 15:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi friends,

I wonder if I can call on your help please, I am trying to find out what the names are for this Close and the other is called Canongate whatever it is, I have looked up the chart for Closes and Courts in the Canongate but none of these seem to match.

One is a small clip from the 1891 Census and the other is from the 1901 Census.

Many thaks in advance for your help.

Regards.

Archie.

Hi, could the first one be Morocco Close?

The first one is 273 Canongate Morocco Close No.1. This is probably the one known as Morocco Land.
The second looks like 130 Canongate Court.
Parts of the Canongate have been redeveloped so the exact addesses may no longer exist.
GRAY - Inveresk; Lanarkshire
LINDSAY - Lanarkshire
PURDIE - Lanarkshire; W. Lothian
POZZI - Elgin; Lancashire
MACKENZIE, MORISON - Stornoway
ARCHIBALD, HAY, HUNTER, SNADDON - Clackmannanshire
COXON, HALL, JACKSON, SHOTTON - Northumberland

Agree, Isabel and Meggy1  :)

There is this:

You can find Morocco Close on the map here:

http://maps.nls.uk/townplans/view/?sid=74415762&mid=edinburgh500_se

North side of Canongate (which is the road that runs from middle of the right hand side to the bottom left hand corner) at the far right hand side of the map.

I've had no luck finding the location of Canongate Court either on a map or in a directory.

Hi

Could it be 130 Canongate contd rather than court.  We'd need to see the previous page though  :-\

Hi all,

thank you very much for your support, yes it could be Contd, and I agree with Morocco Close, it now makes sense, I wonder at the continued part, many look at the Canongate being from John Knox's house downwards, perhaps that is why they used it.

The hand writing is terrible compared to the others that are neat, one I came across for East Lothian the person that wrote the Census must have used a Snooker Cue.

Anyway, once again your help is appreciated.

Regards.

Archie.

Rather than 'Canongate' continued, I read it as '130 Canongate' continued, to indicate that other residents of '130 Canongate' appear on the previous page.
