Durness - monumental inscriptions
« on: Saturday 15 January 11 17:06 GMT (UK) »
I seem to recall seeing an entry on this site that someone had
produced a list of burials in Durness. Can anyone help me.
I am looking for a George Mackay of Mid Vale.  I believe he died
in 1937.  He was married to a Willamine Elizabeth Nicol Campbell.
Grateful for any information.
Many thanks, Ian

Hi Ian,

perhaps you saw this topic at some time:

One of the links given there is for the County Sutherland website.
The Durness page might interest you:

You have to become a member (for a nominal fee) to view pictures of the gravestones.

Since I am a member, I looked it up for you.It is indexed as DU C 207, which indicated Durness, Balnakeil. The photograve of the stone is fairly legible, although some parts are not clear. Fortunately, the transcriber, Karen Sutherland-Pahia, has written it down for us. It reads: 'In memory of George Mackay who died at mid Villa, Durine 15th September 1937 age 68 years, beloved husband of Williamina E. N. Campbell and said Williamina E.N. Campbell who died 8th May 1956, age 73 years"

As you may know, Durine was the original Village and is now the central part of the village of Durness.

I may have omitted to pass my thanks to you for the
monumental inscription you passed to me.
Apologies if I did, and many thanks.
