Rev James Mitchell c1850s
« on: Friday 15 April 05 22:48 BST (UK) »
Looking for info on the Rev James Mitchell, minister of the Irish Presbyterian Church.

He turns up in Scotland, where he was the minister at the marriage of a James Smith(from Tyrone) and Letitia McGuffin (Newry), being later a member of the Church of Scotland)

Does anyone recognise the name?  I'm hoping to place him in a parish, and perhaps identify a parish for my James Smith - allowing that there may be some particular connection.

Thanks

Janette

Going through older posts and came across this one. By now you might have been able to find more information.

This was posted under Londonderry/Derry but your James Smith was from Co. Tyrone. Do you have a reason for thinking James Mitchell was in County Derry?

Presbyterian Churches are organised into Presbyteries not parishes. A History of Congregations in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland 1610-1982 doesn't list a Rev. James Mitchell for the period you are searching.

Did you contact the Presbyterian Historical Society and if so were they able to help?

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

May or may not be linked (realise timescale different). In Belfast Newsletter of 1/6/1841, it carries in the Death Notices mention of the death of a Rev James Mithchell of the Manse, Aberlemno, Scotland, minister of the parish. He was aged 72 and had been in the ministry 47 years.

The Fasti of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, 1840 - 1870, published by the Presbyterian Historical Society lists a Rev James Mitchell - details below:

James Mitchell, s[on] of John Mitchell, Clough, Down. Educ[ated] QCB [Queen's College Belfast] MCD, ACB, BA(QUI) 1866 [Queen's University of Ireland]; lic[enced] Down 5 May 1868; ord[ained] Curran [Co. Londonderry] 14 July 1869, res[igned] 17 March 1873; inst[alled] Calistoga Springs, Calif[ornia] 1873.

Hope this helps.
