Elliotts York (probably St Mary Bishopshill)
« on: Tuesday 18 January 11 11:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for a birth record of a person I believe is my direct ancestor. His name, as we know it, is James William Elliott and he was born in 1885.

His father was called John Christopher and his mother Mary Jemima (could possibly be Rosa, as Mary died)

We know that his brothers and sisters were born in York but cannot find a birth record for James William, though a BMD search returns a John William born in the same year in York.

We know that when he was younger he showed on the census returns as Willie and then later in life from reform school records was James W.

What is confusing also, is that his older brother, who on census records is 'Leonard', was christened James Leonard Christopher Elliott.

That is what is leading us towards thinking the John Elliott further up is our man, as his parents would surely not christen two children the same first name.

If anyone can shed any light it would be much appreciated

Carole, thanks for the information, most of it we already have apart from a couple of marriages.

The James S you have highlighted is actually Rosa's son from before she married into the family. The James W we are looking for is in a reform school in Wakefield when the census was taken. He is the one shown as Willie on the first census return you have posted.

We just cannot seem to find his birth record and suspect that he may not have been christened James.

John W Elliott's birth is on www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk and was registered in the sub district of Micklegate

You could apply for a copy of the birth cert via York Register Office and put a condition on the application that you only want it of parents were ohn C and Mary J nee Lee

If it's the wrong entry - there is no charge but you would have to pay for the cert if parents were a match

Go to www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk and select births

When you turn up the entry - click on the reference number in the right hand corner

Do the same on the next page and you will then get a completed application form to print off

Thanks very much Carole, I will look into doing just that.

Out of interest, do you know where the parish record transcription are kept for York?

Further to the note above, we have James W's date of birth as 1 Jun 1885. The John W we suspected might be the same person shows on the BMD for the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter. Is it conceivable that the birth not show on the register until the month after being born?

I believe that registration had to be made within 6 weeks of the birth, so July would be OK.
