Census records

Hi does anyone know how to figure out how to read them
 In the 1861 Census I have Hathorn Agnew and family living at  Main street Kirkinner village the number given is 38 am I right in understanding that the NUMBER 38 does NOT represent the number on the door but is the 38th house visited whilst taking the census and if this is correct is there anyway that from this you could work out the exact address?

Have you viewed the full image on Scotlands People or just the transcription?

Address is transcribed as  N 38 Kirkinner Village

Hi I am sure that I have seen the full image as well as the transcription but ,I seem to have misplaced it can't even find it on my viewed images on sp so I will have a look tommorrow and see if I can find it again .
