Hi there

Churchstanton St Peter and St Paul transcriptions are on line (see genuki under Devon as it was then) but there is nothing for a Sarah Walling. Where have you found the baptism date and place?

Hi Shirl,

1851 census she is married to William Moore in Lyme Regis birthplace Church Taunton, Somerset, year of birth 1795

1861 census, still married to William. birthplace Churchstanton, Somerset, year of birth 1796.

1841 census just says not born in Dorset.

I have looked at the Genuki Churchstanton baptisms and yes, there's no Sarah Walling. There are 2 Wallen children born at the right time to be siblings, William bapt 1788 and Betty bapt 1791 they are children of William and Sarah Wallen. William snr appears to have died aged 38 and a pauper in May 1794, causes unknown, and I suppose Sarah could have conceived a child right up to the point of his death thereby having the baby early 1795.   I guess being newly a widow she may not have been able to afford to baptize her child or else she was baptized in a different parish.

Sarah snr died a pauper in Eckham (a tiny hamlet in the parish of Churchstanton) in 1844 and buried in Churchstanton. On the 1841 census she is named as Walling and is living in Churchstanton with her married daughter Betty and her family, called Burford.

Unless you or anyone else can thrown more light on this conundrum  I can only assume I have the right parents.

Thanks, Diane

Are you confident that Sarah junr was a spinster when she married William MOORE?  I note that the IGI has a member-submitted marriage for them 06 Sep 1820 Honiton.

Hi, I'm as confident that this is the correct marriage as I can be. Someone sent me a copy of the marriage record you found on the IGI and it clearly says spinster.

I have looked at this family from several angles and one reason for being confident that this is the correct marriage and that Sarah's maiden name was Walling is that her son is William Walling Moore and his son, Sarah's grandson, is given the name Walling Oscar Moore.

I did wonder if William Walling Moore was a child of a previous marriage but he was born in Lyme Regis in 1826 which was 5 years after William and Sarah's first child, Caroline (my g g grandmother) was born in Honiton, she was baptised in March 1821. (also IGI)

thanks for your help  :) :)

I had a look at the microfiche copy of the Churchstanton Baptisms, which prompted a question of whether there may be Bishops' Transcripts extant?  From past experience I have found that register and BT entries do not always coincide, and BTs tended to be better presented!  Although tax was payable at this juncture, it would have been waived due to the family's circumstances, so there would have been no impediment to baptism.

The only other suggestion I have is that it might be wise to cast the net a bit further afield.  Some of 'my' GILLs of Churchstanton popped up in the registers of Clayhidon and Yarcombe, and one in particular, whose parentage I've been unable to prove, had his children baptized in several different parishes en route through Devon and Somerset.

Sorry, the BTs will not be available online but you could enquire if they're available at either Somerset RO or Devon?

I'm off out this afternoon so I can't investigate further at present.

I will contact them and see what they can do.

I hope you enjoyed your afternoon out, it's been a lovely day,  :D we climbed up to St Catherines Oratory near Blackgang Chine on the Isle of Wight where we live - steep climb but worth it for the views!!

thanks again for the advice, if you do happen across any info please share with me :)
