Hedefin, Birth & Christening
« on: Sunday 23 January 11 02:58 GMT (UK) »
 ???  Hi everyone been away having knee surgery,now getting back to the research, a friend sent me a copy of a possible ancestor's baptism/cert and it has me wondering if the child's father could possibly be my Grt Grand-father, here is what I have,,,

Isabella Hedefin (b)16 Nov,1857 baptised in Ballynahinch Catholic Church, (F) Samuel (M) Rose Gilmer,, witness Arthur Webb. At the bottom it says settled, 16 Nov,1857.

Now my question is could this child be illegitimate but the father Samuel did acknowledge her,,??  Reason is my Grt Granfather Samuel Hedifont/Hedifen (various spellings) was born c1840 Cty Down. his father James, mother Jane, he married Mary Ann McBride 16 March/1863 1st Presb/Church Newtownards and around 1865 the family moved to Glasgow,Scotland to join other family

I have looked up  Rose (Gilmer) and found a death as Rose Savage 24 Dec/1910 age 87 buried Ballygalget Catholic Graveyard, she was the daughter of Hugh Gilmer, mother Margaret ? says 'Savage Family in Catholic Records.
Perhaps Rose Gilmer later married a man named 'Savage'

Would appreciate if anyone can shed any light on this if there is a connection,I have some info on Isabella in Newcastle,England in a marriage,,,

Kind regards;
Janey ::) :)

Where did you find this record for Rose Savage?
This Rose would have been born c1823 going by her age in death register and Samuel born c1840 according to your post so it's unlikely to be the same person.
However, if Isabella was born c1857 Samuel was only about 17 when she was born if the c1840 date is correct.

Is Samuel listed as single on the 1863 marriage certificate?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

 :) HI,, thank you for your quick reply to my query,to answer your questions, I found some info on Rose Savage on Ros Davies site, I always check there when I get something new as I have my family names listed with Ros,,,,

I first checked for all Gilmer names and noted an Owen Gilmer who had been a witness at the marriage of John Donnelly & Mary Ann Savage, so that set me looking for Rose Savage, found her as 'Mrs' surely she had married as it says she is the daughter of Hugh & Margaret Gilmer. Mrs Rose Savage (d)24 Dec/1910 at Ballyphilip, age 87, buried Ballygalget Cath/Gravyd. I also read on Ros/site the Savage is an ancient family name of Ballyphilip/Ballygalget was originally from England and confiscated in 1690 after Williamite-Wars.

Now as to my query about the birth of Isabella Hedefin, father Samuel, it is quite possible this man is from another branch of the Hedefin family as there was quite a few brothers farming in the area at that time. As for my Grt Granfather we are guessing at his age as I have never been able to find his birth, in Glasgow he gives his age as 37yrs in 1877 but I have estimated his age anywhere from 1835-1840, on his marriage/cert to Mary Ann he is single/full-age whatever that means,,??

We are quite stumped with this baptism/cert for Isabella, there is a branch of the Hedefin family in England all descendents of James Hedefin of Bangor,who was born Bangor and settled in Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1850.Isabella Hedefin in question went to England,settled & married there, I am trying to get more info on her life then.

 Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated,thank you

Kind regards;
Janey. ??? ::)
