St Mary`s Bowden parish records.
« on: Sunday 23 January 11 16:36 GMT (UK) »

Are there parish records anywhere for St Mary`s church Bowden?

I`m trying to find a  baptism for a Sarah Hewitt about 1807
 at Altrincham.

Hi Jay
Tried to find Sarah for you as I have Hewitts in my tree, but they come from
Yorkshire not Cheshire.  I searched for St Marys and they have a good site with names of the buried and connected family names, but they dont have any Hewitts. I did search another church in Knutsford called St John the Baptist and there is a Sarah Hewitt born 19th May 1806 Cheshire but christened
at St Johns the Baptiste, Knutsford, on 8th June 1806 parents are
William Hewitt and Violet.  How do you know that her christening was at St Marys??? Today Bowden is classed as Near Knutsford???

Thanks to both Pauline and Sandymc. for your help.

Sarah`s birthplace altered according to the  census  - Ashton / Bredbury / and Altrincham (twice) so I`m working my way through possible place options.
The one constant on each census was her age  - two years older than her husband  who was born late 1809.
Now I know there weren`t any Hewitts at Bowdon I can concentrate on the other options.

Thanks again.

Jay

You could try an email to www.bowdonchurch.org.  I know at one time they had an archivist who was very helpful.  A few months ago his name appeared on their website but it doesn't seem to be referred to now.

That's bizarre, it was a couple or so miles from Altrincham when I lived there.  It must have moved.  ::) ::)

It's possible if she states she was born Ashton or Bredbury, that she was baptised in Stockport, or near by.

I fall on my sword lol
I searched for Bowden and believe me it did say Nr Knutsford
I have since looked at a map and it is nearer to Altrincham
Sorry for that but you cant believe everything you read, and yet,
we are supposed to when researching ancestry lol.

Just a littel something that may add knowledge.

Bowdon was a very large parish up to the mid 19th century and included townships like Altrincham, Bowdon, Hale, Dunham Massey.  Bowdon was and is spelled with -don not den,  However over the last few years there have been signs erected showing Bowden - but these tend to have been put up by those who havn't checked properly  :)

Nowadays, whereas Bowdon is still a large parish,  Altrincham is a market town and has its own parishes.
