John and Beryl MARRINER of St Peter, Jersey
« on: Monday 24 January 11 03:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi there

Can anyone help me with an exact date of death/burial for Rev John Turner MARRINER in about 1946, and his wife Beryl Aileen MARRINER in about 1953?

I have come across references to their Wills, but I haven't been able to identify a specific date of death or an age to go with it.

Many thanks

Hi Philip

Are you sure you don't mean Joh TAYLOR Marriner?

You're absolutely right (how embarrassing!)

It's Taylor - his mother's maiden name.

Hi Philip

I think I have most of the information you require.

First BAM's death is recorded in St Peter Deaths, December 1963 to January 1975 on page 276. I have not looked at the certificate but I have looked at her will and it is marked that she died 31st March 1970.

I could not find a death for JTM so I looked at his Testament but that gave no death details.

Both wills made reference to their sons, John Stuart Marriner and Thomas Douglas Marriner. BAM's will also referenced her sister, Jenna Wingfield Darlot, and her brother Ulick Candy Brown.

I then looked at Applications of evacuees wishing to return to Jersey after the Occupation. BAM's request is DJM201106. It shows that she left Jersey in June 1940 and gave her occupation in both Jersey and Great Britain as a housewife. Her English address was:

Woodston Manor,
Newham Bridge,
Nr. Tenbury,
Worcestershire.

JTM's request is ARA258926. He left Jersey 23rd June 1940 so would have been one of the last to leave before the Occupation. He gave his occupation in Jersey as a "Retired mining engineer, born March 1875". His British occupation was given as "Gardening". No mention of being a Reverend. He was living at Box House, Beaumont whilst in Jersey but gave his British address as c/o Westminster Bank, Lothbury, London. The interesting thing is that his card has written across it in red "Deceased". The consensus is that this means he died before returning to Jersey, otherwise most of the cards would be marked in this way.

I then searched for a John Marriner death in Worcestershire and found a John T. Marriner who died in September quarter 1944 in Tenbury, Worcestershire, volume 62, page 98.

Hope that helps.

Stewart

Many thanks indeed for this wonderful treasure trove of information. Obviously I had confused the date of signing the Will and Testament with the actual date of death; it is amazing that Beryl was alive until 1970.

This is the first time I have had the middle names of other family members; I was intrigued to find that Ulick's middle name was Candy - clearly it's this link (via his maternal grandmother) that led me into this research.

At the risk of imposing on you, I wonder if there's any way of finding out how old Beryl was when she died? I am trying to figure out the birth order of six brothers and sisters, and a calculated year of birth for Beryl would be really helpful.

Thanks for taking all this trouble on my behalf; I truly appreciate your help.

Kind regards

Hi Phil

If you can wait a couple of days I'll go and have a look at the certificate which should hopefully have her age.

Based on  this information, I simply used a search engine to look for "john taylor marriner" and "worcester" and I manged to find his actual date of death (27 August 1944) and certain other facts about him from a couple of on-line obituaries in the mining and metallurgy area.  You were of course right about his career; it was his father and grandfather who were both ministers.

Kind regards

Hi Phil

BAM nee Brown died 31st March 1970 at Les Murailles, St. Peter. She was noted as the widow of JTM and was 91 years old. She died from hypostatic pneumonia, uraenjia, arterio sclerosis and an occlusion of femoral arteries.

Well done on finding the birth of JTM!

Many thanks for this look-up Stewart

It has allowed me to complete this particular strand of research. In particular, it allowed me to identify which birth was the correct one; the newspaper article simply referred to the birth of a daughter; now I know which one!

Kind regards

Philip
