Can anyone find Emily CLEMENTS nee ORAM after 1881
« on: Monday 24 January 11 10:22 GMT (UK) »
Emily Oram married Josiah Clements in 1876 and I have found them on the 1881 census at Upavon where she was born living with Josiah and his son Frank. Josiah died in 1887 and by the 1891 census Frank is married and living at Upavon, but I can find no trace of Emily after the 1881 census.

She was born in 1849 at Upavon in Wiltshire. Any help or ideas would be great.
Many thanks Heather

Hi Heather

This is very speculative so treat with caution!!

Marriage reg  Emily Clements & Thomas Ashton
1887  Q3  Pewsey Wiltshire  Vol 5a Page 253

1891 - RG12/1612/151/3
Pewsey
Thomas Ashton  Wid?  53
Alice Ashton  dau  17

Alice is not with Thomas in 1881

BUT

1861 - RG9/1307/61/14
Upavon
Frederick Oram 43
Martha Oram 37
Emily Oram 11
Stephen Oram 9
Jane Oram 5
Sarah Oram 3

1871 - RG10/1938/7/6
Upavon
Fredrick Oram 55
Martha Oram 47
Jane Oram 15
Sarah Oram 13
Elisa Oram 9
Alice Oram 7

1881 -  RG11/2060/97/26
Pewsey Wiltshire
Fredrick Oram 65
Martha Oram 52
Jane Oram 24
Sarah Oram 23
Alice Oram 17
William Oram 1

So - what if
Alice is Emily's illegitimate daughter

lives with grandparents until sometime after 1881 (perhaps until Emily marries Thomas Ashton)

by 1891 something has happened to Emily (the Wid? is on the original image) but Alice is still living Thomas

As I said - treat with caution!!

If you want full details give me a shout. It didn't seem worth typing them out if this is complete rubbish   :o

Hi Linda

Thanks for the reply and if I did not know the family I would think this viable.

Alice Ashton living with Thomas in 1891 is definately his daughter as I have her birth certificate. I think she is the Alice listed as daughter and living at Wroughton with Abraham and Mary Ashton in 1881. I am not sure about Ann Ashton (both born Pusey!) but Harry Ashton listed as son is infact their grandson. Abraham and Thomas were brothers. Thomas Ashton widower had wife Mary Ann Grove who died in 1873.

The Thomas Ashton who married Emily Clements was son of Thomas above. To confuse things further, she was the daughter of Josiah Clements and step daughter of Emily Oram, his second wife. She was actually born in 1868 as Emma Clements and her younger sister Emily was born 1866 and died in 1868 the year she was born!!!! This totally confused me when I was looking at the family as my Gran (daughter of Thomas Ashton and Emma Clements) was registered as Florence Emily.

Many thanks
Heather
