Rachel Hannah Died 1871 Balmaghie
« on: Monday 24 January 11 22:06 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for any information on Rachel Hannah MS Simpson who died in Balmaghie 1871 aged 93 [death certificate] which give a birthdate about 1778

she seems to have been born in Cumberland probably in Sowerby

She married  James Hannah in Dalton Dumfrieshire in 1825

and had 3 children Mary born 1826, Isabella born 1831 and Rachel born 1833

in 1841 census she is living Dalton with James and her 3 children, stated birth date about 1791

Cant find her in 1851 census

in 1861 cenus she is living with her daughter Rachel and son in law Mark Simpson in Colvend stated birthdate is abt 1783 listed as a pauper

I think her death date is 18th Feb 1871 hence she doesn't appear in 1871 census

I would be grateful if anybody could fill in any gaps, particularly the 1851 census and any gravestone.

this is not really the right board but if any info on her parents would be great

Thanks in advance

Hi tkgafs

Cummertrees, Dumfries-shire has not yet been transcribed on FreeCen for 1851, so this is from another transcription source (I'll leave as but it's a bit messy and worth checking on the original image):

James Hannas 42, Pauper Formerly A Labourer, b. Derby Ireland
Ratchel Hannas 71 b. England
Ratchel Hannas 78 b. Cummertrees, Dumfries
James Hannah 9 Months, grandson b. Dalton, Dumfries

Address: Berlock Road, Cummertrees Dumfries-shire

Sorry, just trying to find the link to the free 1851 census transcript which is www.dgcommunity.net/historicalindexes/census.aspx

Search for James Hannah in Cummertrees. He shows as aged 62, born Derry Ireland.

Monica

Added:  If you leave first name out, there are only four entries for the Hannah household I posted earlier in Cummertrees.

tkgafs, have you confirmed Rachel's parents from her 1871 death cert? There is an IGI submitted entry for Rachel with parents named as John Simpson and Agnes Shepherd.

There are a mixture of IGI actual extract and submitted entries for a couple with these names:

1. Joseph Simpson Christening on 5 JUL 1778 Troqueer, Kirkcudbright
2. Mary Simpson Christening on 8 OCT 1780 Troqueer, Kirkcudbright - actual extract from the OPRs
3. George Simpson Christening on 20 JUL 1783 Troqueer, Kirkcudbright

And then the details you mention, Rachel Simpson Birth in 1783 Of Sowerby, Cumberland, England.

Can't easily see a marriage for parents on the Scottish Old Parish Register indexes.

First of all thanks for your assistance, I doubt I would have found the 1851 census entry without your help, I had already looked on the maxwell ancestry site, but had failed to find it.

The big surprise here is James Hannah aged 9months, in the 1861 census he is listed as James Simpson born 1852.

Yes I can confirm tonight that her parents were John Simpson and Agnes Shepherd, his occupation on the death cert might be Schoolmaster but at the moment I'm uncertain.

It would seem likely that the other children on IGI with John and Agnes as parents are probably siblings, but I havent checked yet.

Monica

I can now confirm that the 3 Troqueer baptisms above are correct they are listed under Simson rather than Simpson and the Mothers name looks like Agnes Sheephead and in the case of Mary is listed on Scotlands People as Sheepherd

Rachel probably cant be born in Sowerby in 1783, if George is being baptised in Troqueer in 1783, but Rachel birth year varies widely on the census records, so she probably simply doesn't know when she was born

But I still cant conclusively link these two family groups together

the OPR records simply give place of birth as Bridgend and no further details

I cant find a real birth record for Rachel anywhere

There is a John Simpson born in Castle Sowerby, Cumberland 10 Dec 1754
and an Agnes Shepherd born in Middleton, Westmorland 29 Jun 1755

but no evidence of a marriage of them anywhere either

Anybody got any ideas of other places to look
