Pen ddol or Pen y ddol, Trevor Uchaf
« on: Wednesday 26 January 11 13:28 GMT (UK) »
Sorry for another query about a place name, but if I have more information on this street/area, it might help me sort out my Williams and track down some relatives!

My gggrandfather is living on Pen y Ddol in 1841 and Pen ddol in 1851.  I think they are the same road, since on both censuses they run on into Geufron and Bridge End.  But I can't find Pen ddol on any map!  If it helps, in 1851 Pen ddol runs from Geufron, via Bridge End and Bridge End Sq past Trefor Arms and a Toll Bar.  It has a good hundred people living on it, so it should be a relatively substantial street.

Many thanks to anyone who can help!

Thanks for your interest.  Excuse my ignorance, but I am not sure which refs to quote - are these they?

1841 Class: HO107; Piece 1400; Book: 17; Civil Parish: Llangollen; County: Denbighshire; Enumeration District: 5A; Folio: 23; Page: 1; Line: 13; GSU roll: 464319.

1851  Class: HO107; Piece: 2509; Folio: 437; Page: 17; GSU roll: 104279-104280. Merionethshire>Trevor Uchaf>District 5c>p13>Sch70.

Edward Williams is living at both addresses.

Best regards

I`ve found Pen Y Ddol bridge, and seems to know the area, it`s on the way out of Llangollen towards the Chainbridge ,
I`ll try to locate it on a map. it doesn`t seem to be marked as a road.

Hi I'm not sure about this.  The bridge seems to be on the wrong side of Llangollen - quite a way from Trevor Uchaf?

Hi

I've been looking at the old-maps site all around the area and have found Pen ddol close to where Wilcoxin has indicated.

On old-maps.co.uk, select Llangollen and select 1880 map. Then zoom in until you see Geufron. It's to the west near the river

On a modern map it's approximately  here:

We used to walk around there on wet games afternoons   :)

I forgot to say that if you go to the description of the enumeration district #5c of Trefor Uchaf on the 1851 census, you'll see that this is the correct location. The township of Trefor Uchaf streched quite a way to the West towards Dinbren

I am sure as I can be that this is the bridge, I can`t find anything about the road being called Pen Y Ddol, but would take a guess that is was the road thats marked as the A 542.

Many thanks to you both for the advice, maps and local knowledge.   I am inferring that Pen ddol and Pen y ddol are one and the same, so shall press on with comparing residents and neighbours.  Has either of you come across the Trefor Arms in your research/wet afternoon walks?  It might help me to get my bearings!
