Burn and Mahon of Co. Westmeath
« on: Sunday 30 January 11 21:54 GMT (UK) »
Looking for information on families of a Peter Burn(es/s) b. 1797 IRE and a Margaret Mahon b. 1804 IRE.  They married c. 1822 IRE.  Family history says Peter's family was upset at the marriage and/or his family were "redcoats".  But later records show Peter was Catholic.  Baptismal records for their children were found in Ballyloughloe Parish RC, Co. Westmeath dating 1826-1847.  Two sponsors for the children were a James Burn(e) and Catherine Mahon. The entire family immigrated to New York, City, US in April 1848 except youngest son Michael (b. ~7 Mar 1847) having died prior to leaving IRE.

Peter's occupation was a cooper according to passenger list and subsequent census.

Peter may have had brothers John and Hugh?

Thanks!

To find Irish ancestors for such an early period you need to see if church records exist.
Have a look at Introduction to Irish Records and My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
